I have an 02 SS with 69K miles. Had a mechanic put it up on the lift today to identify where a noise is coming from. We put the car in fourth gear and heard what can be somewhat described as a howling noise coming from the aluminum drive shaft. IT gets progressively louder with higher speeds. He put a stethoscope device on all other parts including the rear end (front and back) and couldn't find any other noise so it really does appear to be the shaft itself. U joints look fine.
Is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem?

It turns out the aluminum shaft is hollow with a cardboard tube in it to dampne the noise. The noise sounds exactly like cardboard being whipped around. I believe it probably somehow came loose inside the driveshaft. Unless anyone knows of a reason I'm not going to worry about it. Steve

I had something similar going on with my aluminum shaft. I took it to a drivetrain specialist and had it re-balanced and it solved the vibration and noise. Cost me all of $40 to do. You might want to look into having yours re-balanced or checked as well. :)
