Hey guys, we just picked up a 98 TA And I was wondering what oil you guys use, I know in my vette, with the ls1 motor, requires synthetic, but in the TA manual it doest mention to use synthetic, I thought that was kind of strange since the vette needs it I would have thought the same for TA, here's a little eye candy for ya, thanks Ozzie

Do they come from the factory with synthetic?

I'm 99.9% sure all LS1's and LS2's use Mobil 1 synth. from factory.
They are factory recommended....... :yup:

My 01 TA did not come with Mobil 1. Your Vette does not require it but it's not a bad idea. I use Redline 10W30.

i used to run quaker state 10w-30 in my maro. starting to hear ticking on start up (oil was breaking down too fast) went to a quaker state 10w-30 synthetic blend. went longer till the ticking on start up (still breaking down) and it was just starting to get a fil, of metal on the drain plug. so i stepped up to mobil 1 full synthetic. 40 bucks an oil change now, but no more ticking, and no more metal film on the drain plug. and still comes out pretty clean after changed

I've been reading a lot of good things about German Castrol Synthetic 0W-30... only trick is it's tough to find and you have to read the back of the bottle to be sure it's German made, because the USA formulas don't work nearly as well.

IT DOES NOT REQUIRE SYNTHETIC OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It recommends Mobil1. Called a marketing agreement.
Or a pimping agreement. Your warranty requires you to utilize API certified oils within viscosity recommended. That would include WalMart SuperTech oils.
GM does not require any motor it makes to utilize synthetic oil.

Penzoil 5w-30 Platinum, syntetic oil, change every 5k.. if you race it almost every day, I'd do every 3-4K miles oil change.

I noticed the late model Firehawks recommend Mobile 1. I use Mobile 1 10W-30 . Change the filter every time the engine oil light comes on and oil ever other time, total about 7k miles between oil changes, according to independent tests Mobile 1 should be good for about 10K miles between changes. The filter I use is Purolator Pure One.

Mobil 1 isn't full synthetic anymore, I wouldn't go that long between changes.

Since when? Just asking because I bought some for an oil change over the weekend, and the box still says "Full synthetic" like it always has... and it was a good 5 months since the last oil change.

Ive just put in some RP 5W-30 and it seems to work great! but i get more valvetrain noise. compared to the Valvoline 10W-30 Full Synthetic.

i switched from valvoline 10w-30 syn to the highly acclaimed mobile 5w-30 syn.

my 2000 ws6 has not ever ran this bad. worst piston slap.

i'm gonna try the royal purple. if that doesn't make her run better i guess i will have to look for what i started with.

i'm gonna have to pay in british pounds though...

Tyler_LS1

I think the 10W-30 has less noise with piston slap then 5W-30 does.

me too. switched to mobil 10w30 syn, piston slap is at its worse. i can't get valvoline 10w30 syn here in england. my ls1 loved valvoline, quiet, smooth, and no noises of any kind.

well, tried to see if going from 5w to 10w would quiet down the piston slap but it's the same.

unfortunately i'm stationed in england right now. royal purple. mobil, and castrol (non german) are the only synthetics they have on base. locally i will have to pay in british pounds, which will be twice the price due to the exchange rate.

i was told that you can switch to synthetic but you shouldn't switch back to conventional.

i'm trying rp 10w30 next week and see how that goes.

You never want to swith to conventional after you have used sythetic. Have you tried AMSOIL by chance. I runit in my Harley and and in my race cars and have no problems at all

it depends on what base the oil is... an oil like mobil 1 you can switch.. if you use something like AMSOIL you are not recommend to switch back at all..

it ran quieter at startup, the engine seemed to run more "free".

i don't care if it's 50% water, my t/a loves valvoline.

got rid of the highly acclaimed mobil and put valvoline maxlife 10w30. piston slap is totally gone, hard starts are gone, rough idle is gone, and it feels like it revs a bit faster.

that ticking noise is back though. my friend's firehawk does the same thing. i was told it was the injectors pulsing away. are injectors really that loud or is it my buddy’s wild guess, who knows...

valvoline has been around for like 130 years, at least that's what their website states.

i'm sticking with valvoline from now on and it's cheaper.

tylerls1 - sorry but i was going to try rp and decided to go back to what works for my car. she has 77k miles btw.

thats great! i had vavloline in my car when i first got it it wasnt to bad, i used the Valvoline full synthetic power max or something like that.

not all peoples driving habits are the same so different oils can make a difference, i tried Valvoline Mobil 1 and RP and I just like to RP better, its just what ever works for your car and your driving habits.

the noise should not be the injectors unless they are really plugged up.

diesels have that distinguished tick sound thats the injectors, they are pushing much more PSI though them than we are on our LS1's.

All the talk about switching back to conventional I think is nonsense. No proof anywhere that I'm aware of..

Mine never knocked UNTIL I went to Mobil 1.
Switched back to dino oil and ticking went away..
