View Full Version : Help! Calipers dragging on disc brakes....

Just put new pads on my 2000 SS, now after the brakes are pressed, the front brakes drag on the calipers. Did I do something wrong or is it just because the pads are fresh and thick? Anybody? Somebody?...

Disc brakes ar constant friction, they will always have some drag on them.

Drag enough until the rims will burn the shit out of your hand and brakes smell? I can tighten the lug nuts firmly with the car sitting on jack stands and no brakes applied. I can barely spin the wheel.

You have something wrong....did you pull & grease the caliper pins?
Did you push the pistons back into the the bore before installing pads?

Yes, greased pins, used old brake pad and c-clamp to push pistons back into calipers.

Were any of the guide pins siezed or just hard to get out? If so you'll need to clean out the hardened grease/dirt with sandpaper and then relube with proper grease.

Yes, Severedistortion is correct in the fact the crap has to be cleaned from the caliper pin holes.
The calipers HAVE to float on the pins. Any crap will cause them to bind and prevent them from releasing.
Use grease made for this purpose, it's a special synthetic grease.

You might try flushing the old fluid.
If sludge has built up in the master cylinder, it may be preventing the calipers from releasing.

The other scenario is a possibility the pistons in the calipers are cocked in thier respective bores.

Is it both sides or one??

Both sides are stuck. And i flushed all four calipers until i had new clear fluid from the bleed port. Gonna try cleaning the pins and the holes. Thanx for all the help. And what kind of grease exactly should I use?

Ask for a synthetic grease for caliper pins I suppose.
When I did my brakes the set came with a tube of it.

My wheels turn easily, with the pads barely touching when the tires are rotating.

I've seen bad brake hoses do this, they act like one-way valves. Used to be you never saw that but it is much more common now.

That was it!! After close inspection of one of the caliper pins found hard build-up of grease which was preventing proper sliding action. A little sanding, a good greasing, problem solved!! Thanks for all your input!!

Anyone know where you can but new caliper brackets? I had a pin seize up, and as a last resort I drilled it out, but I'd like to replace it just for good measure. Problem is I can't find them anywhere...
