Ok here is the deal I can not reach all of the bell houseing bolts the way my shop manule tells me how to do it. do I need to separate the trany from the bell houseing first? I am in the middle of a tare down and I am getting kinda frustrated.

Installunversity.com has a good write up on this. But yes undo the tranny then the bell housing.

Yes it is much easier to seperate the trans from the bell housing. Then I suggest a 21" extension, a swivel joint, and some cussing. Before long you'll have it out. Also if you've never pulled it more than likely the bellhousing pins will be seized in the block, lots of penetrating lubricant and prying outwards it will come off eventually. When you put the bell housing back on put some grease on the pins so if you ever have to pull it again it will be much easier! And yes installuniversity.com has an excellent write up listed under McLeod Clutch install! Good luck!!
