I have a Ls1 with 64,xxx miles. I have a valvetrain upgrade, LS6 intake and so on. My question is, are the stock valves good for the job? I can slide them in and out, is that normal with no springs installed?

Yeah that is how they are supposed to work. Although if you have been playing with them I would install new valve seals as cheap insurance. The valve spring locks hold the valves to the retainer and the spring pressure holds them against the valve seats...

EDIT: Are you changing the springs with the heads still on (easiest way to do it)? If so you need to use either the TDC method of keeping the valves up or a compressor with attachment to pressurize the chamber.

the motor is out of the car and the heads are off.

Cool that is even easier then (for just the valve spring change). Good luck with your set up!
