Is it a aftermarket Tach or OEM?
I'd disconnect the tach wire...check all the fuses...inspect for shorts....is it pegged or is it at zero? Pegged is a short....zero is a bad guage...

It's OEM and the needle is on zero........ What do you mean by "disconnect the tach wire"?....... You mean by disconnecting the gauge cluster from the wiring harness plug and reconnecting it? I looked for cluster gauge fuses can't find any. donno

Wish I could help you dude. Did the car go to redline? I'd want to know wtf caused that too. Just a guess but it sounds like your tach took a dump on you. Have you checked the wire going to the tach? Are you getting a signal there? I'll think on it and maybe something will come to me.

I don't know Orion, if it redline or not i wasn't in the car when it happened.
What color is the Tach wire anyway? I'll pull the cluster out tomorrow and test for the signal....... I just thought with all the know it all here there would be a quick solution to this bullshit problem..... :brick:

It's a white wire. It's pin 10 on the red connector on the pcm.pinout (http://www.ls2.com/boggs/torques/2002pcm.htm)
That's actually for a 2002 but the haynes manual lists 99+ together and it also shows a white wire to the cluster for the engine speed.
If my tach ever dies I'm doing a hood tach :D
