View Full Version : Y pipes

can someone please elaborate on these "Y-pipes". do they come out of the headers? and whats different about Off road Y-pipes? ahh this is kinda confusing for a 17 year old
Zboner
09-11-2006, 08:24 PM
yes they come off the headers into one section like a "Y" hence the name, lol, and ORY(off road Y pipe) is gutted meaning it has not cats on the pipe
tigersport14
09-11-2006, 08:44 PM
is the ORY louder? what does the "Y" lead to?
Zboner
09-11-2006, 08:45 PM
yes louder cause the cats are gone, and the Y leads to the I pipe into the muffler
tigersport14
09-11-2006, 08:57 PM
ohh, so i should get ORY pipes, and what kind of mufflers? SLP loudmouth?
BlackLT1Z28
09-11-2006, 08:58 PM
You should only get an ORY if you don't have emissions testings. You need cats to pass emissions.

:yup:
of you want loud get the Loudmouth, i mean loud, and it has a lot of rasp about 2,300-2,500
tigersport14
09-11-2006, 09:04 PM
so i should just get, pacesetter headers and loudmouth?
BlackLT1Z28
09-11-2006, 09:05 PM
The loudmouth I had on my last Z sounded good, and I didn't have any raspy sounds at all. I am actually thinking of getting another one because, for some reason, my longtube headers actually quieted down my exhaust note, and I wanted something a little louder. So I might go with the loudmouths again. Stainless Steel for cheap.

There are many possibilities you could go with. Check out www.ls1sounds.com for various soundclips of setups people are running.

Never heard it on an LS1, just a few LT1's.

that would be a big negative
BlackLT1Z28

Fitment of the EGR crap on my pacesetter's suck. Still fighting it right now.
BlackLT1Z28
09-11-2006, 09:08 PM

Then you will have to shell out extra cash for an install and that isn't cheap for headers. Look to pay between $400-$600.

Cam with true duals.
tigersport14

what will true duals do, what does a stock T/A come with?

Hell yeah. Nothing like a lopy cam with true duals dumped before the axle. Well, open headers with a lopy cam trumps ALL.

I had the open headers for a LONG time, got old, then the true duals, they were ok to low for me, ran a cutout on a Y pipe for a while, now im waiting on my Borla to come in
BlackLT1Z28
09-11-2006, 09:27 PM
Borla are too expensive IMO. Loudmouth are stainless steel too and cost half the price.
And after my header install, I ran open headers for a few days, and they got old quick. Fun when driving for fun, but driving from place to place, the noise gave me headaches it was so loud. But fun when I wanted attention from other mototists.

That's gonna be sweet, but I'm not paying the install charge for those. Plus the elctric cutouts are $200 a piece, the ones that I've found at least.

it has a decaent sized cam in here though man also, on a 114
BlackLT1Z28
09-11-2006, 09:33 PM
GMMG are nice too, but pricey again. Those go for around $800 too, new anyway. Not a bad deal though.
What type of headers/y-pipe setup you got ZBoner? My pacesetter Y-pipe goes a long way down the tunnel, I had to chop off a lot of my flowmaster catback to get it to fit. How much do you think I would have ot chop off of the LM if I got those? Would I still have room for the modular design?
tigersport14

Told ya it was sounded sweet. But cam and valvetrain for that sized cam is not cheap, plus full exhaust and install. That would blow your wad of cash quick. You may need a small load.
BlackLT1Z28
09-11-2006, 09:36 PM
whats a 114?
That's the cam's lobe separation angle (LSA). It describes the angular distance between the intake centerline and exhaust centerline of the cam. One of the characteristics of lope.

DAMN! That's a lot of shit at one time. You probably could have bought a house for that.
Yeah, the flowmasters came with the car and sounded really good as just a catback. So, I figured that LT's would improve that sound and give me what I wanted. Nope, it actually got quieter. I am pissed. I was done with the car after the headers and not planning to spend anymore money for aftermarket mods, but I don't know now. I don't want my parents to kill me though, either.

With his lack of knowledge right now (no offense), I don't think he should be looking at cam kits right now.
Pacesetter coated LT's + Y-pipe= ~ $520
SLP loudmouth catback= ~ $420
Plus install if you don't do it yourself.

My car was down for 2 weeks for my install. I had work and shit to take care of and didn't work on it everyday. But that car fought me every step of the way. From rusty bolts to fitment issues. I had to get a cherry picker and lift the engine on the passenger side to clear the header. My install experience was a bitch.

no offense taken man lol, im new to LS1s...im a newbie. thx for the prices though! im def. gonna do that first thing once my dad finally buys my T/A. he said if i get all A"s and B's at the end of the semester he'll buy me a T/A for about 10k. i have 5 A's and B right now...im doin pretty good...

Spoiled bastard! I had to buy both of my Z's. And mine are only LT1's. But that's cool. More mod money in your pocket. Just make sure you have a plan first and not go out and buy a bunch of random parts because you hear people talk about them on forums.

im not really sure what im doing first, ill probably wait until summer to do my mods

ill be fine for a week or 2
BlackLT1Z28
09-12-2006, 09:23 PM
That's what you think now, but wait till then when everyone has their hotrods out and your stuck in your garage trying to piece your car back together. J/k dude. You'll be fine. But I'd do it in the spring when its cooler to work on it.
tigersport14
09-12-2006, 09:31 PM
actually im paying for installation lol
BlackLT1Z28
09-12-2006, 09:40 PM
That sucks. Do it yourself and spend the install money on another mod. I was going to have them installed, but decided to try it and saved myself $500.
