Who's Power Shifting?

Seriously, hold the gas pedal to the floor while I'm shifting?!?! Won't I break something? I think my car has the right equipment for it, I just don't know if I have the right equipment to do it...

Best 1/4 mile has been 13.4 at 105MPH - no power adders, just the regular bolt ons. Looking for strategies to improve...

I have a 1999 Z28 with M6, Lightweight flywheel, Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch, McLoed Adjustable Clutch Master, SLP Short throw shifter.

Don't power shift.......too many bad things can happen..... WOT and missing a gear and possibly bent a valve or worse.... and I'm not even talking about clutch damage or potential flywheel damage either.

I'm an A4 guy... sorry.

Why not practice more? The car prob has a bit more in it... maybe 0.1 or 0.2?

I do when I am driving a standard. It is the only way I know to be consistent enough to bracket race a manual transmission car on a regular basis. It takes lots of practice to be good at it. If you are not comfortable doing it, don't do it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll stay away from power shifting - until I get close to needing a new trans anyway...

Just wish I had a junker car to practice on. Might have to hit some of those gov't auctions.

I am way to afraid to attempt that as well. I'm assuming that to do this rather than shifting at redline you shift at your peak power RPM level instead?

That is how you do when you RACE!
WOT and POWER SHIFTING.
Yes its BAD for your syncro, if you miss a shift and Drive LS1/2/7 you might get a Bend pushrod or some thing.
You may want to uprade your shiter to B&M ripper or Pro 5.0
But Power SHifter is the only way to do it.

i learned how to powershift from my dad (ex. street racer). when i was like 16 0r 17 we would go to used car lots to find mustangs and camaros to practice with.

So my question is: How do you power shift???

I know you don't push in the clutch, but do you let your foot off the gas?? Or just keep it on and ram that stick into the next gear while hammering the gas?
When do you power shift (what RPM?)?

If you get an aftermarket short throw, would it lessen the chance of damage when power shifting because it's a better shifter?? Or all the same amount of damage?

OK. Someone take me thru the step by step of how to power shift. Is there any way to start learning how to do it without risking my car too much? Also, I'm bummed noone is commenting on Post #7, I thought it was pretty funny (relates to post #6).

The car will be at risk so no easy answer for that.

I simply kept the foot on the floor for the 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. No lifting, no clutching

I power shift. Don't ever take your foot off the floor and knab the clutch as fast as you can. Doesn't look THAT fast in the video, as I was being a bit casual.. but if you close your eyes and listen to the shifts it still sounds awfully fast.

However.. I did blow out my first t-56 doing this. I credit it to me learning how to do it, and also the shitty stock clutch was causing major engagement problems....

Had the tranny rebuilt by Futral... had it built with the standard, forged keys and the like. It held up to 11.65 @ 117 cam only.... and should handle a 150 shot, power shifting and much more coming up very soon.

Sorry, but unless you've got a Lenco, this aint' happenin'. Unless you interrupt the flow of power to the tranny by either slightly lifting on the gas or pushing in the clutch it's not going into the next gear.

Yea... I was thinking the same thing. Not clutching in these cars is impossible without a pro shifted tranny.

if you think about it the only thing at risk learning would be the clutch. and if you have a other than stock clutch then it shouldnt be too bad. i mean, your shifting only when the clutch is shoved in, so your not tearing the tranny up or putting it under any stress. cause as soon as that clutch goes to the floor, all torque is off the tranny. at that point its freewheeling (under no load) and capeable of handling a shift. so as long as you dont try to let out on the clutch and insted you pop it you should be fine. the trick is to get the clutch in and out as quick as possible and include a shift between. dont dick around getting the clutch out or it will slip.

Wow, that looks and sounds like quick shifting. Looks like you don't let up off the gas, is that correct? Doesn't the engine rev when you push in the clutch to shift into the next gear? I didn't hear or see it, but I guess that's power shifting. Love the sound of that LS1... Love that little kick you and your friend got when you mashed in 1st. :love:

If you are quick enough, the revs should only raise 50-100 between shifts. On cool days when I am not running my slicks or drag radials on the street, it can create some major traction issues going into second, third.. and sometimes even fourth.

But no.. never let off the gas. When I first started I couldn't keep it off the rev limiter. I got to the point I could hit it around 6700, with my limiter at 6950, and I could keep it off the limiter.

It helped that I got a 5 inch tach, that was way more accurate, and had a shift light. Stock tach is very weak.
