my claybar....melted?!

I don't know if i messed up, or didn't read the precautions on the box. But yesterday it was cloudy, high humidity and around 89 degrees. I just bought a set of Mothers claybar that came with an auto detailing spray and some kinda liquid wax for the claybar.

I followed the directions, and as I started with the claybar, it just melted all over the paint on the car. Literally seemed to be adhearing to the body panel, and as i went back n' forth it just lost more and more. I didn't hear it "picking up the dirt" on anything. It also felt like it was melting in my hands. So before it could do any damage i grabed some hotwater and soap and rubbed it all off then waxed the car, removing any clay bits that were left.

My question is; WTF HAPPENED? There's no pix in the box and i never thought that it could melt like that; is there a precaution i over looked? Can you not use it in over 75° weather?

Sounds like a defect in the clay bar, Iv seen it come apart peice by peice but never melt. and the heat shouldnt effect it that much, Iv used it in much hotter weather than that.

I also purchased a Mother Clay bar and got the exact same results. The clay bar was simply smearing on the paint a little, I heard NO "supposed" - dirt removing sound and I basically just wanted to get the mess that they clay bar left off of my cars finish immediately. Just to add, it was not hot or humid when I used the bar. All in all I just want the money that I wasted back!!!

Just an idea, were you using the detail spray or the carabu wax when you were rubbing the clay bar on the car. It sounds like from what you were saying that you used the wax and your supposed to use the detailing spray. Maybe I just didnt read it right but its an idea. Maybe it was just a bad claybar.

yes i sprayed first, then clayed, then applied some carnuba crap to the clay bar when i saw it melt, thinking it would help.

this is shitty, freakin 15$ on a whole kit! anybody got a better brand?

I used the mothers one several times w/ no problem. Maybe you just got a bad one.

The car should be cool to the touch...no direct sunlight...and use the spray liberally....alot....I spray the shit out of the section I'm doing before clay even touches metal....you dont have enough lube it's gonna smear and come apart...

When I use the Zaino clay bar I make up a bucket of soap (Z7)and water and use that for the lube...That way I can wash it when I'm done with that spot, then rinse of course. I've also done it in the rain, that worked good too....

the bar will not work right if you are in the sun!!!! you must spray the mist down firs and rub your cars surface with your hands working it into the paint (like a primer) then do the clay bar you must do this inside of a garage or coverd area if there is dirt flying in the air, you run the risk of catching a piece of dirt and dcratching the vehicle. hope this helps

you don't apply the wax directly to the bar either. Just spray the car down with the mist or use really soapy water and rub with the bar.

do not put wax on the clay bar just use the detailing spay a lot and wipe it off with a terry cloth before it drys. than was after you have dont the whole car. no direct sunlight. this was my result after doing it correctly. http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26636

your car was too hot and or you didnt use enough of the spray, the wax is for when your finished claybaring and wash the car.
