Bottom of rearend is moist w/ oil!

I noticed two days ago that the bottom of my rearend was black and moist with grease or oil under the housing where the drivshaft meets the rearend. I got the gasket and fluid changed about 20,000 miles ago @ the dealer. Car is a 2001 SS camaro w/ 89,000 miles.

Any suggestions of what it might be?

Pinion Seal???....mine seeps a little and I plan on replacing it along with my U-joints very soon....it's just been too dang hot outside lately.

I'm thinking pinion seal too - mine leaks also - not worrying about it unless I see drops on my driveway overnight.

How difficult is that to replace?

It's not a real hard job...but change out your u-joints because the drive shaft has to come out and taking out the driveshaft is half of that job.

One of two things...Pinion seal or loose/leaking drain plug. Often time Stealerships do not replace the crush washer with anew one...they just either toss it or re-use the old one....

you might have a leak were the pinion bolt is on the yoke.most people overlook the fact that fluid leaks by the yoke & pinion splines,mistaking it for the pinion seal.you can fix this by removing the pinion nut,then the yoke(of course you'll have to drain the case).clean the splines on the pinion & in the yoke,put a little " #2 form a gasket'(non-hardening)on the splines just inside the yoke(on the side that the drive shaft attaches to).put it on,then put some on the backside of the washer,install it,& put the nut back on.tada!you have just fixed one of the most mysterious leaks on an axle.of course make sure you know how to properly re-torque your pinion nut before you take on this task.put the rear coverback on,refill your diff. fluid & rock on.
