Im assuming what you actually mean is the all the forward positions are 3rd gear , starts in third ends in third and that park, reverse.neutral are normal ,
This would be and electronics failure ,It could be anything from a failed solinod to the harness being disconected from transmission ,
First I would check just that the harness make sure its plugged into trans , next check fuse box for blown fuses , It you find both are ok have car scanned at a transmisions hop or I beleave auto zone does this also , Be sure and have them give you the code numbers not just tell you what they mean ,
If available at a local transmission shop ask them if they have a shafer shifter , they will know what it is , Have them hook it up and withn this tool they can eliminate transmisions electronics and you will know its a vehical elctronics issue .
If you get those codes send them to us and we will try and help you out .
thanks

Some times we all assume , the worst , but then I did say provided park reverse and neutral are working ok and I would say they were not lol , anyway glad it was something simple ,

Easy. that didn't work. It fixed half of it. Now the trans still won't go in park. Sometimes it will stay in drive sometimes in reverse. Nutral might go in but most of the time you have to go to D1 to get it in nutral. Any more help is needed.
