View Full Version : Shifter options?
I have looked online and in catalogues, unsuccessfully, for some sort of kit that will limiting the factory shifter from moving more than one gear at a time. Hard to explain but I want to prevent accidental, or unintended downshifts and upshifts while manually shifting the car. For example, the torque pushing me back in the seat might cause me to inadvertantly move the smooth shifting lever down two gears instead of one, which of course could be bad. Anyone know of any products which address this?

Why would you manually shift and automatic? ... can't out think and out react the PCM ... besides optimally shifting an A4 is all about throttle control ...
If you know you're about to get on the gas you can downshift the car the few tenths of a second prior and jump on the gas. The normal routine with the automatic on drive is the pedal halfway depressed, which gets the transmission to start its downshift and then jump on the gas. Anyway, I'm just wondering if there is a way to get the shifter to lock from gear to gear to prevent accidental downshifts. If you've ever had you hand on the shifter when the torque kicks in you can see how it might happen. Maybe not often but once is enough.

Half tap the gas and it down shifts immediately while accelerating ... downshift prior and it just gears down and slows down ...
My experience with my car is a bit different. However, I have yet to modify any of my induction system which could lead to snappier throttle response and, hopefully, quicker shifts. I'm planning on a smooth air lid and belows and I found an awesome tutorial at ls1tech.com for porting the throttle body.
All that aside, it is still fun to manually run through the gears occasionally. Nobody has sugested any options here and my searching didn't yield any results, either. Probably isn't a product that meets the criteria I mentioned.

You would probably have to change the transmission valve body to do so. They make manual valve bodies, but then you would have to shift it through the gears manually 100% of the time, which isn't too great for daily drivers. There's probably a valve body available that offers automatic shifting with a manual mode for driver control, but you'd have to look into it.
The other issue is the computer. I believe the guys who have aftermarket valve bodies have the transmission reprogrammed, because the trans is electronically controlled and the PCM is what runs it.
