Porter Cable and a white pad plus any good car polish.

No, swirl marks are typically surface scratches. My car's black. I used my Porter Cable for the 1st time this past weekend and it beats using your hands all to hell.

10 Grit sand paper with toothpaste works great.

Try a clay bar, or have the car buffed by a professional. Waxes tend to just fill the scratches in and hides them....once the wax has worn off the scratches will be visible again.

I used a soft cloth and the lightest buffing compound I can find.

Rule of thumb, if you can feel a scratch with your fingernail it isn't going to come out without a repaint.
I'm not sure how big of a scratch you are talking about. And for further information, waxes do not remove scratches.
