Free Ram Air or $300 K&N Cold Air Intake???

Ok, I would love to put in the K&N but there is no way I could save up that much any time soon. I have seen a few people do the free ram air mod by taking a Y-Tube and attaching 2 mounted cone filters to it. Does anyone know how this compares to spending the $300 on the K&N? Is there really a performance gain?

i dont know about the y tube thing... but the K&N FIPK claims a 15 Whp gain and they include a dyno sheet with it... im not sure how accurate that is but i noticed a difference with it over the stock airbox.

I've got a SLP intake and they claim 25hp gain.
"Bout 3 hunered bucks".
Same price as k&n but more power. This info doesn't help I just thought you should know so in the future when you do have 3 hundered dollars you can get one insted of a K&n. Order from Jegs, trust me. FAST FREE DILIVERY!

my best advice, free ram air, or the slp under air scoop kit with a lid. It'll be a lot better than the FIPK and cheaper. About $100 for the lid, and $120 or so for the under air kit

mines got the SLP box, it seals the front of the box so that no air can get in, virtually making the hood scoops just for looks and engine cooling, but it does pull some massive amount of air from under the cowl, where the air flows to cool the radiator and condensor, on a cold morning it sounds like someone turned on a damned vacuum cleaner in the front of my engine...SLP box, cold air kit, 90mm MAF, ported and polished TB, the throttle response is amazing to say the least, spent $210 shipped from Jegs, i did the port and polish myself

I went the K&N route, but did not notice any power increase. One thing I did notice, I got in a heavy rainstorm and it sucked water into the intake.
I no longer have the K&N.

The plan I have, still need to do some research, is to install a BG Ram Air gasket to seal the hood to the airbox, install their hood drain plugs, and then install an SLP (or similar) airbox lid and smooth bellows to smooth out the airflow. Anybody have thought on this? Seems to me that it would probably provide the maximum amount of airflow especially since it makes the hood truly functional. I am avoiding the full BG Ram Air kit because my car is a daily driver and sees occasional heavy rain. I would think that the factory rain blocking plate and the small area around the hood latch would be enough to keep water from entering the airbox.

Also, anyone have opinions of the Volant setup?

I found MORE power removing the SLP "cold air" duct and just having the large hole in the bottom. Real drawbacks of the ductwork system:

1. blocks too much air from the A/C radiator. overworks compressor
2. sucks up alot of road dirt
3. problems getting it to seal, staying sealed

I did remove the plastic and so forth recommended during installation of the SLP cold-air duct. I ran it for 4 years. there is a good BOOST at 80, but gas mileage seemed to suffer.

I removed it, got the gas mileage back, and don't really notice that much of a difference/loss. Actually the low end seems stronger.

The duct only directs air at 1/3 of the filter and it plugs up quickly. I think cutting the bottom out of the air box is most of the boost.

animals built a nest between the duct and the A/C radiator. it just about shut down the a/c.
