I seem to have this reoccuring problem with my car. IT actually comes and goes and today it came back agian, but worse then ever.

When i shift the car into 3rd(or 5'th) the stick grinds. I can shove it in there, but its unnatural. I can hear grinding and other noises that don't sound good at all when i shove it into gear.

I'm thinking it can be a number of things. Maybe a bent shift fork in my tranny? My master/slave cyldiner- or perhaps my clutch. The clutch was blead not too long ago, and the fluid is fine.

This is all on a 2002 ws6.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

ick, throwout bearing could be at foul here...when you have it in neutral, does it feel like there are marbles swirling around in there?

are these on upshifts or downshifts?

does it only grind when you mate the gears or does it grind for a while afterward?

I'm having the same problem going into 3rd(Upshift) with my 00TA.

I think I have the same problem. Does the noise seem to transmit through all gears as well? I can hear it quite noticably through 1-5, but not really in 6th. I'm guessing due to the ratio of 6th gear not driving the rpms as high. What kind of repair cost is it to have the throwout bearing replaced? I presume the tranny has to be dropped out completely to do this???

When my clutch was giving out, I had a problem getting into 3rd. After my clutch install that problem went away. You might want to take a look at the fluid in the clutch master. Mine had turned black from the exhaust heat picked up by the line from the master to the slave and probably from overheating the fluid in the slave because the disc was slipping. You can replace the fluid with a gravity bleed.

I did notice that the fluid looked pretty black in the reservoir. I will look at bleeding it. Anyone have a suggestion on whether to stick with DOT3 or change to DOT4?

Well, first, you can use a cooking tool to remove the fluid from the reservoir. I think it's called a basting tool. It's $3 or so. As far as fluid goes, against the advice of some forum experts, I used high temp silicone. Some people say the silicone will make your seals go bad in the slave. I don't know about the accuracy of that. I just know I've had it in mine for about 6K miles and 6 months w/o any issue. Do your research and make your own decision.
