I am about to have to replace the carrier in my 10 bolt so i wanted to know what would be the better choice. I currently have a stock Zexel that is popping and grinding like a son of a bitch. I cant afford a 12 bolt or 9 in right now so I dont even want to hear that I should buy one!!! I just want to know since I very rarely race the car and it has never been on the drag strip. Also I would like to know why you choose one over the other!
Thanks, Brent

I chose it because I feel it superior to ANY clutch type LSD.

I was road racing a Mazda GLC fwd in the IMSA/RS series in the mid 80's when I first heard about this diff. Prior to that fwd cars had no LSD, we had to run a locked differential which made the car hard to steer and understeer a lot. When we first experienced a Gleason Torque Sensing differential, we thought we were in heaven! It was sooooo smooooth...no spinning the inside wheel like an open diff...and no kick back and under steer at low speeds.

When this diff was introduced as an OEM option in '89 on the RX7's it, again proved itself to be smooooth, no chatter, no noise and totally transparent until you put the power down. No doubt this is the reason most high end performance vehicle use Torsen diffs rather than clutch types, plus they don't require that additive that clutch types do.

I was glad it was standard equipment in my Hawk and if it blows I will replace it with th HD version.

If you plan on running at strip, go with the Eaton. I replaced mine [stock Zexel torsen]with the Eaton around 4 years ago, been very happy with it.

The Z/T's just don't last especially once you start modding !The
Eaton is a tough unit & with a T/A cover is probably the best you can do with stock 10 bolt ! :notworthy:

I used to have a 2000 SS. I replaced the stock one with an Eaton and 410 gears when the car had less than 2000 miles on it. I loved the Eaton. Sold the car. Now I got the factory one in a box in the garage.

i've used both in my ta,the zexel is much much much much much much much much much better than the Eaton.the Eaton is ok for straight line and sucks in the turns.Zexel rocks in all conditions.

What was wring with your Eaton in turns?

for turns, get a Torsen T2R... much better than both choices given.

the eaton locks the axles together, not very good for making turns.zexel is open letting the axles turn freely from each other.

If I may reply also,

...the same as all clutch types, they are subject to chattering and noise in turns, mostly noticeable at low speeds. Plus they REQUIRE the special lube additive just for that purpose. And usually, synthetic gear lube is not recommended because it will make the clutches slip.:drivin:

I MUST SAY THAT THE ZEXEL HD WILL BREAK ON HARD LAUNCHES AND BURNOUTS....SMALLER GEARS INSIDE CANT HANDLE ABUSE DUE TO SHOCK. BUT WILL DO REALLY GOOD ON A ROAD COARSE GIVEN YOU DONT GET ALOT OF TIRE SPIN ALL THE TIME...MY EATON HASNT BROKE YET AND IF IT DOES ITS REBUILDABLE...eaton make em with forged steel gears and housing, rebuildable clutches....yeah it matters what you will do to it
