Is there anything to look for in specific to identify if they are bad or not?

push up on the transmission tailshaft to see if the mount is broke. try to push the driveshaft at the u-joint itself to see if there is any play in them.

I finally got under the car today and was not able to push up on any part of the parts mentioned. I came accross a small crack in the trans mount rubber. Below is a picture of what I found. Could this small crack cause the car to have a rough shift from 1st to 2nd sometimes.

Sometimes it does that gear change very smooth.

Where is the cheapest place to get an original mount if this is the problem?

wouldn't have anything to do with the sometimes harsh shift. when's the last time you did a transmission fluid and filter change?

I changed the trans and differential fluid about 15000 Miles ago.

One thing I can't tell how deep that crack is I may just have to take apart and replace it.

if it doesn't hit the limiter bracket, it's fine for now. the only place i could ever find a ls1 trans mount was at the dealer for $81.00. you can do what i did and get one for the 82-97 cars. they cost about $6.00. i have those in both cars. or get the ES poly mount for abour $22.00. i have ripped the $6 mount 3 times in the black car. the 3rd one is holding.

I would like to know this also. I was quoted GM 22174970 as a replacement transmount for MM6 but don't know if it is the 1LE mount or not. Also GM 22174969 doesn't register in the dealership parts computer.

i just got done changing mine it was 17.98 at advance auto parts and that cured my problem. easiest way to tell if it's broke or not just take it off and look, did mine on a lift took 30 mins. or less

I also have an auto doing the same thing...took it to the dealer about 2 weeks ago and they changed fluid/filter and also reprogrammed the trans with an "updated" program. Still having same problems...clunks from 1 to 2 only sometimes...but very bad when it does--and also is also sometimes sluggish shifting from 2-3.

Did the mount, did the torque arm bushing, just had the driveline balanced and have two brand new u joints. I also have a fresh tranny service including synthetic oil and a nice cooler. Guess what - still clunky. I did notice a significant amount of play in the tranny tailshaft when I had the driveshaft off. Anyone want to bet that this is the clunking noise source? Its better - even with the poly mount, but I don't think all is healthy.

My local Dealer, McCurley Chevrolet, was given two opportunities to fix the situation on my GM Certified used camaro. They replaced the front splined yoke on the driveshaft citing that the splines were worn. I asked them about the tailshaft splines and they said they were fine. Unfortunately, they didn't take the time to check the balance of the driveshaft because it was WAYYYY out of spec.

Anyone have any suggestions?
