This summer Im looking into gettting the whole setup from SLP, Headers, Y-Pipe, and cats. Its a big purchase about $1300 so Im wondering if anyone else has used this combination and what kind of gains they got. Its going on a 98 Ram air, I already have the computer edited by SLP, the harmonic balancer, lid, loudmouth, etc. What kind of HP we looking at? Any help or feedback would be great THanks

For about half you can get the same gains from a Pacesetter set-up.
Plus...you won't be scrapping the shit outta your headers with the Pacesetters. Even at stock ride height.
For future reference....avoid SLP.

What about the DYNATEC supermaxxxx header setup does that have better clearance than the SLP, How do they compare?
Mr. Luos

They ALL have better clearance than SLP's. :yup:

If i do go with the pacesetter setup, what cats should I get and should I stick with the pacesetter y-pipe, also is there an install kit that is similiar to the one that SLP sells?
Mr. Luos
04-29-2006, 09:59 AM
That kit SLP sells is a complete rip-off.
By those pieces separate from other vendors and save 40%.
Random Tech (http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog/?action=vshop&vid=3&pcid=8) for the cats.

What exactly is in the install kit that I need? Anything I cant get from autozone?
Mr. Luos
04-29-2006, 10:57 AM
The O2 extenders you need to get from a sponsor here or any LS1 type shop.
The clamps can be gotten at AutoZone.
The header gaskets...I like to get them from GM.
Don't really need bolts unless you want the locking ones. I have used the stock bolts without problems so far.

Thanks for the help, so between the pacesetters and the hookers which ones are better? I know they are both reputable brands but im looking for quality, the difference in price isnt much of concern
Mr. Luos
04-29-2006, 01:48 PM
I don't have any experience with either.
Both are good from what I have read.

I have pacesetters and have had no problems with them in 2 years. For the money I don't think you can beat them. I can use these up and buy a second set and still be cheaper than one set of the pricey headers. Just my opinion. Don't get the header install kit like he said, it's a rip off. Also, if you plan on any other mods do yourself a favor and use all band clamps instead of U-bolts. The U-bolts will crush the pipe and make it a bitch to get them apart again where as the band clamps don't damage the pipe. I got my clamps from NAPA just because they always seem to have them in stock. Check out thunder racing for the O2 extensions. Are you planning on running cats on the car? If not you'll have to get O2 sims or get the codes deleted. I bought the stage 8 locking bolts and never even used the locks. Pain in the ass to get on and off if you ask me. I would just stick with stock bolts. I bought GM gaskets too.

Don't get me wrong, the Pacesetters are great headers.
But I still say the QTP/Kooks are worth every dime.
My Kooks are great quality, fit well, and are stainless. Plus...they are 1 7/8" primaries.

what kind of HP gains are we looking at with the pacesetters or hookers with free flow cats and y-pipe? 50+ HP Does anyone have any dyno stats on this?

No way in hell will u see 50 from pacesetters. My friend saw 40 from KOOKS, and we all know where KOOKS is and where pacesetters are.

Im talking all together with headers y-pipes, and cats. Thats what I want to know whats going to give me more, pacesetter, SLP, Hooker, or KOOKS
98ramairguy
04-29-2006, 08:01 PM
Where can you get KOOKS headers and how much are they?

SLP's original Tuned-Length Long-Tube Headers use our patent-pending tuned-length design to optimize exhaust scavenging for phenomenal power increases. Gains of up to 41 horsepower and 58 lb.-ft. of torque are possible, depending on your application!
Are these numbers any where close to what they actually give you? This is straight off theyre website

I guess what I really want to know is what is the best bang for your buck headers? Hands down what is going to give me the best gains and quality for the money?

PACESETTER!! BUT,
If you wanna save up KOOKS and QTP are the best of the best headers for the LSX engine. Mind you they are also $800 for just headers. Add another $350 for the y pipe ($625 for catted) and for about $1200 you should be set. This does not include the $400-500 installation fees some shops charge. Last word, Pacesetters are great value for money, Hooker are a littel better and expenseve, KOOKS and QTP are the best, and like Luos said worth every penny. Its like comparing an LS1 to a V-6 camaro/firebird. Both are good and fast. BUT if u have the $ and want raw power, the LS1 is the car for u.

Another reason SLP sucks.
No way any header will get you that much unless you are running stock manifolds on a head and cam car and then add headers. Then the heads and cam will finally be able to breathe.

Oh...and I paid $820 for my race Kooks shipped.
My old SLP headers are on top and the new Kooks are on the bottom...

Don't get me wrong. Kooks and QTP's are awesome headers. I just couldn't justify the price difference when it came time for my headers. There were tons of other parts I wanted and the difference in price between those and pacesetters was pretty significant. For me it was a price only decision but one I don't regret a bit because after 2 years my pacesetters still look brand new so even though stainless will last a lifetime these coated pacesetters are gonna last me a long time also. I'd say if you have the money go stainless but if money is any issue you'll be just as happy with the pacesetters I think. The gains between headers are close enough that it comes down to what you want to spend or how long you want them to last. You're not gonna see 50 hp that's for sure. :D

Any other feedback on the Best headers to get? Any personal experiences
Mr. Luos
05-03-2006, 07:07 PM
Price not a concern???
Probably Kooks/Stainless works/QTP.
Dynatech are nice as well.
98ramairguy
05-03-2006, 07:08 PM
not a huge concern but I want to keep HEaders y-pipe and cats under $1100
98ramairguy
05-09-2006, 09:25 PM
First question-
If I get the Qtp headers (emission style) will they toss up any codes and make the SES light come on?
Next Question-
Who has else has the best price on the QTP headers, besides Thunderracing.com?
Last Question-
On thunderracing QTP sells a catalytic y-pipe, Is that a y-pipe with catalytic converters, the cost is like $500 something?
Thanks for the help Im getting close to purchasing some headers
Mr. Luos
05-09-2006, 10:01 PM
Do you plan on SERIOUS mods in the future???
If not....get Pacesetters.
That said....if you get headers with emissions fittings you shoudln't throw any codes unless the hi-flow cats do it.
98ramairguy
05-09-2006, 10:05 PM
what do you consider SERIOUS mods?
What can you do if the cats throw a code can it be deleted?
Mr. Luos
05-09-2006, 10:13 PM
Yes.
A local tuner can delete codes like that. Or you can run O2 sims. Having the codes deleted was cheaper for me.
Serious would be stroker, a blower, a huge cam with heads, large shot of laughing gas.
98ramairguy
05-09-2006, 10:16 PM
im was thinking in the future I would get the heads ported and a cam not a huge one but a significant one.
WHeres the best place to get the QTP's?
Mr. Luos
05-09-2006, 10:19 PM
Just wondering...why are you set on the QTP's??
Not sure who all carries them.
Thunder
TSP
Byunspeed
TByrne
etc
Just try to find a place that has them on sale.

The SLP header will give you issues with ground clearance. If you plan on lowering your car, they are a bad choice. My car sits at the stock height and I only have about 4 inches between the bottom of header and the ground.
98ramairguy
05-13-2006, 04:23 PM
from what I heard the QTP's are a high quality header the high velocity merge collector is also a plus as well as them being stainless steel
Mr. Luos
05-13-2006, 04:28 PM
The only difference in the Kooks and the QTPs are the collector.
98ramairguy
05-18-2006, 07:40 PM
whats better KOOKS or QTP? The cost is pretty much the same.
Mr. Luos
05-18-2006, 07:51 PM
Whichever you can get cheaper!
98ramairguy
05-19-2006, 08:49 PM
Is that Catted Y-pipe set-up that QTP sells worth the $500? or should I buy the stuff separate?
BLKbandit98
05-20-2006, 08:21 AM
im with you man, im gonna place the order next week. I think it depends on the cat you get. If your onyl gonna save $40-50 then i think its worth buying the catted Y.
98ramairguy
05-22-2006, 03:15 PM
where you ordering from?
BLKbandit98
05-22-2006, 04:28 PM
direct from QTP

05-29-2006, 06:28 PM
I just ordered my QTP's last night, I got them on sale from Thunder racing (Memorial Day sale) $1250 with shipping for the headers and catted y-pipe.
I didnt order 02 extenders because I dont know what length to get, What length extenders do I need to get for a 98 Ws6? Also what are the best gaskets to get copper? Thanks a lot
Mr. Luos
05-29-2006, 07:13 PM
Gaskets I use the factory GM ones. Get new ones from a sponsor if you aren't in too much of a hurry. Otherwise go to a local stealership.
My best guess will be a 12" extension and a 24" extension. Might just be two 12" though.
Is the car a daily driver??
98ramairguy
06-08-2006, 04:31 PM
yeah car is a daily driver
Mr. Luos
06-08-2006, 07:02 PM
Damn.
I was gonna say...if it isn't, just wait until the headers are installed, then just see how much extension you need.

Headers are on back order and taking FOREVER! I ordered May 28th and I still dont have them or know when they will be shipped.

I have used both the SLP set up and the Kooks. I Loved the gains i got with the SLP's wich was about 32 horse. The only thing that i didn't like was the clearance problems. My car is slamed and they drug on everything. My buddy now has them on his ss and they are still really low and all he has is a eibach pro kit. Other than that they are one of the best flowing headers out there. I now have Kooks because we started selling them as well at work and i needed 1 7/8 headers for my built motor. They flow almost or as good as the SLP's. The best part is they fit snug up under the car great, just like they came stock. I have put them on alot of f bodies and vettes and they gain around 25 to 35 depending on your cars mods. The only down side to the kooks is that they do not come ceramic coated. I had mine done at jet hot for around 260.00 as well as the y pipe. If you need extensions you can order Them from kooks or slp. They will work for any set up. Re use your factory metal gasket it is the best sealing one out there, they should still be ok.

So. Did you ever get your headers, how do you like them? I just ordered Hooker Super Comps, ceramic and their ORY. Ordered from Jeg's last Thursday night and they are scheduled to be delivered Monday, no extra charge.
