Good advice for exhaust...
If your planning on goin for headers and ORY (off road y pipe) go for something like a Magnaflow, its the middle grade, sounds GREAT at W.O.T. and won't kill your wallet.
(i might be selling mine within the week, only has ~1,200 miles on it)
If your planning on leaving stock manifolds and Y pipe go for something like the SLP LM, cheap and will make you loud.
If you wanna spend some bucks but get top of the line all around go for Borla, Corsa or the infamous GMMG.
I'm far from an expert, lotta guys here know TONS about internal engine stuff, but that's what i've gathered from experience with exhausts.

Alot of people rip out their catalyic converters.

do the "off-road"y-pipes loose the cats?
BADBLUE02
05-03-2006, 03:23 PM
That's right. "Off road Y" means no cats. You'll have to buy some o2 sims to stop the computer from throwing a code or just have the code deleted from the computer.

My signature has my mods and dyno results. I did do the STB first and weld in SFC early in my mods.

Everyone seems to like the lids. I have learned a lot about my car since I got it. But strangely enough, I haven't looked into the benefits of a lid. I just has stock on my car.
Also, what is "TB Bypass"

I put on a set of gutted cats with the o2 sims and a FLOWMASTER muffler and all I have done are the other common bolt-ons.With a set of mickeys my
WS6 turned a 12.92.I don't see anything wrong with the flowmaster.Alot of
people talk out their.... well you get my point.Anyway do what you think is good and ask alot of questions.By the way welcome to the world of LS1!

You live in Cali so you prolly won't be getting Long Tubes due to the strict emmissions there. I'd lose that Flowmaster and get a Borla adjustable catback.
JoeRiceKillr
05-06-2006, 12:17 PM
i am not worried about emissions. my wrx had full 3in turbo back that was catless. headers are going to happen soon. If i get LT's do i still have a y-pipe? how does this work?

I read that the SLP lid was the best flow and performance! It's what I run!

I have a stock y and a slp powerflo exhaust system, with no catalytic convertors. Is this going to pass north carolina emission tests without the convertors?
Thanks

For a stock car a mail order tune will make a difference. Dont really need a dyno tune as of now until you get more extreme mods.
FRA=Free ram air mod.

Hey JoeRicekiller, what flowmaster you have? 80 series or did you go 40? I am looking to get a super 40 for my firehawk, from what i understand the 80 series arent too loud but those are the crossflows which are made from these cars. I am having something custom made so a 40 series will be on mine.
A lot of people will tell you to stay away from flowmasters, im not one of them. I think flowmaster is one of the best sounding mufflers out there, not to mention they are very popular on many other platforms. I dont see from an engineering standpoint how flowmasters wont flow well on an ls1 pushing 350-400hp but they are ok on 600-700hp blown muscle cars. Personally I think a lot of people either just repeat what they heard or buy something like an 80 series muffler and say all flowmaster dont flow well without doing some research to see that the 80 series crossflow does not represent everything flowmaster has to offer.

I did have one. On an LS1 with headers and an ORY it sounded like straight poop. Take it from someone who has had one. I think alot of people hear FMs on stangs and say "I wangt my LS1 to sound like that" but no matter what you do, it never will. About two months after my headers/ory went on it blew a hole in one of the welds too.

stock TA's supposedly run 13.7's... I got mine bone stock put a lid on it and a stainless steel SLP exhaust, which a Cherry Bomb :)... I ran a 13.2... I am putting a Torque Convertor on and i highly recomend it, along with headers, a cam, and a new intake.... Im still new to the LS1, but just thought id share some ideas...... if u do a lot of racing, I would also recommend gettin a full suspension done and throw some Mickey's on em :D, well good luck!
