A guy at work saw my car and said "I'll take ya in my '98 Cobra." I said ok, you can try, just to be a smart ass. Looked up the specs of both tonight, and saw that the cobra is about 100 pounds lighter, 40 lbs less torque, 25-30 less hp but could do the 1/4 in .7 secs faster? That shouldn't be right should it? It doesn't really matter as his cobra blew up the starter and he needs to replace that to get it back running. Was just curious.

Should be a fairly decent race with you pulling a little up top.
I would think.

Off the line....is the Cobra a manual or auto??

I believe its an auto vs auto.. but didn't get into it that much as I don't really care much for the guy.

If so you should be fine.

You plan on modding the car??
If so...stall converter. :yup:

Plans possibly later on down the road... want to make sure I can afford the payments first.. lol. This is the first car I have really had to do payments on, and the first one I have gone through a dealership for (even though It was from a private seller, to get the 5 1/2 year loan I had to get the dealership to buy it from the guy and sell it to me). Like I said, I am VERY happy with the purchase, only thing is the braking issues so far. When I get a chance, I'm going to price out what new front rotors and pads will run me. I was told a transmission cooler is almost a must have as well.. that true? What exactly does a stall converter do? (I thought those were only for manuals)

Stalls are only for autos.
They allow the motor to spin to a higher RPM while holding the brake and gas at the same time. They come in different speeds. They allow you to be in a better powerband when you launch.

Tranny cooler is a good idea!
Pads are $80 if you get the stock ones from a dealership. Many other options though.
If the rotors can be resurfaced they should be about $8 a rotor for resurfacing.

98 cobra's generally run around 14.0's, my buddies 96 cobra which is the same car ran 14.20's all day. So you should not have a problem especially top end. Its those 03-04 cobras you better watch out for

Found out today his is a sticksshift.. he says he thought he was told it was 320hp.. but I dunno... either way I think I'd have him..if and when we would ever try....

Whats a decent tranny cooler cost and where/how do I install it? Or should I have a pro do it?

Well.. had the dealership look the brakes over today...after they forgot about my car all day.. bastards... anyway, they fouunf both brake pads to be beyond dangerous levels, I think he said one caliper in the front was bad.. causing the steering wheel to turn while braking, the front pads are going, and the front rotors need machining... to the tune of 470 bucks.. <faints> Wouldn't you think the brakes would be something they would check on the SAFETY Inspections that they did 3 days ago??? I really hate people....

Does anyone else have problems with their signatures not posting??? Sometimes it does and sometimes I have to edit, paste it.. hit save..then its in there twice.. then edit it again, delete it and hit save again. Rather annoying.

Mr. Luos

Default doesn't have the box checked for the sig.

You need to check "Show your signature" for it to show.

Silver Streak

Yeah I know that... and I do click it.. but sometimes...(more often than not) it doesn't show up.

Wonder if there is a feature that it only shows up once in a thread.

EDIT: Guess not.

That is lame, I would expect the pads and rotors to be one of the main checks done in a safety inspection. Since they obviously didn't do that I'd be surprised if they even did this so called "safety inspection" at all!

Silver Streak

Well.. according to the "inspection sheet" They checked the e-brake and the foot brakes... prob just made sure the brake pedal engaged the brakes.. which is cheapass... I mean $30 bucks isn't exactly cheap either...

Do your own brakes....You can get all new rotors and some good pads for less then they're charging for pads and turning the rotors:jerkit:

As far as the cobra...i've raced a 99 vert with intake/h-pipe and catback, I wasn't impressed at all. I couldn't hook for shit and I still had 2-3 cars on him just up to 70....and it was getting even uglier. But when modded those 4 valvers have some good top-end pull.

All cobras are manuals, and a 98 cobra has 305hp. 01' is when they came out with 320 and 03-04' had 390hp

My brother's '96 Cobra dynos at 260rwhp, 272rwtq off the bottle...370rwhp, 472rwtq on the juice. Your auto will be easier to launch and drive down the track, and you should have no problem beating him. Make sure he's not on the bottle though....

$470 for a brake job??? Dude, get some tools and a haynes manual and do that yourself and save an assload of money. That's a really simple job to do.

i big factor you should think about is, how often do you see a stock mustang? he must have some mods done to it, at least exhaust and headers.

05-03-2006, 07:42 AM
No.. hes just gotten it from an old couple... and right now hes trying to get a new starter for it.. I guess hes been waiting for the last 2 weeks for it... said its still stock...

u can say the same thing about a trans am!!!

as for the stall talk... a stall converter doent just benefit off the launch... thats kinda how it sounded earlier... honestly when u launch, its the STR of a stall that will be more important than the size of the stall... the higher the STR rating, the stickier the tires u need, and the harder u'll launch (provided u have tracktion). The stall size will determine how high u can break stall it, but in most cases, esp on the street, u dont launch at the same rpm ur stall is at... ie... a person with a 3500 stall will not launch at 3500 rpms ... in most cases... but after ur car shifts, the rpm it falls down too will be higher, depending on the size of ur stall... so u'll be more in ur powerband (hopefully)... with any stall size a tranny cooler is a MUST, its also benefitial to have a trans temp gauge in ur car so u can monitor ur transmission... just go with the B & M 24k GU tranny cooler... its a pretty simple installation and it acost about $80 or so.

just race the cobra, I would think u'll pull him. I raced a cobra like that one on the highway b4, and with my A4 firebird (with just catback) and my 2.73 gears i stayed even with the guy... and he has some type of exhaust, definitly sounded like the whole setup.. headers + catback

98 Cobras are turds. You'll rape him.

if both cars are stock, the trans am is faster. 4.9 0-60 and 13.4 1/4 as opposed to the cobra that does 5.4 0-60 and 14 flat at best. i know that the ws6 can take 01 and under and i got a 00. its only the 03s and 04 rele.. but thats stock..

youll rape him dont sweat it. Just make sure hes telling u the truth and not lying about mods. And dont be intimidated buy 03 cobras either. I know some guys with just simple bolt ons that clock the same times as stock cobras. The only thing that shines in the 03 and 04 cobras is that eaton supercharger. If you ask me its kinda sad ford had to drop a SC into the mustang to beat a car that was already a year out of production.
