I am leaning towards buying an SS m6 or a WS6 m6. What I was wondering is if there is a better year to buy. Also I have heard rumors that the early years of the LS1's had a oblong bore. How false is that. The last question is if the SS is a better buy than the Z28. Thank you for the help. I will more than likely be buying the car in November once I get off deployment with the army. So any help is good.

never heard of that, the 98's had a bigger cam but smaller exhaust manifolds, the z28 is the same car as the SS without the hood and smaller rims, unless it comes from SLP. if your getting a WS6 i would get an 01 cause of the rims. but if your going to get an SS or Z get an 02

Go 01 or 02 because of the ls6 intake.

The 1998 SS has a larger Cam & bigger fuel injectors, but a smaller manifold than the latter SS's. It has an Auburn rear. It also has an EGR valve. The 1999 has a torsen differential and smaller fuel injectors than the 1998. However, the 2001-2002 SS's has problems with piston slap. The temperature gauge on the later model SS is not that accurate. However, it comes with the ls6 manifold.

If you can afford the 2001-2002, then go for it. However don't be surprised if you have piston slap. I hear it can be very annoying at times.

97 ss with the lt4...or a 2002 ss. If i did it again..i'd pay a few less thousand and get a base z28.

Just bought a 99 SS vert M6 with 70k for $10,500 Owner started out at $14,500. He got brought back to reality quickly. SS deals are out there. You gotta just be patient and look. Most are advertised way too high IMO. Plus anything older than 00 your probably NOT gonna want the financing term and rate. You can finance an 01 for 48 months and an 02 still for 60 months at most lending institutions. Otherwise you'll need cash. Owners who are selling SS's older than 00 really can't afford to pass on a REAL buyer if they are in a bind financially.
As for which SS year is best? Shit man they all run good! I would have liked to had 97 Anniversary M6 with LT4 or LT1. They are just too cool IMO. This may not be fair to the LT1, but if you wanna run and gun all the time then get an LS1. Don't get my wrong LT1's are TOUGH and have really nice low end torque but the LS1 is just plain faster. Either one will get you in front of rustang. And both can be modded to hell an back.

SS or WS6 M6 excellent choice, can't go wrong with either! As to what year ? Well
basically they got a little better every year so a 01 - 02 would be a logical choice.

Some of the 02's got the LS6 blocks, along with intake that both the 01-02's
came with. Any any year is good, as long as car has been taken care of !

if it's really a big deal between ss and z28, you could save a few thousand, get a Z and mod the fuck out of it, and buy the ss hood for what you'll get the stock ss for.

They all are good years. Each year has some advantages and disadvantages. 99's are the only hugger orange for the newer cars. 96 97 just looks mean. LS1's are just faster.

The 98's pcm is a demon, they have only recently made proper tuning software for them. If your gonna leave it stock then 01 or 02 if your gonna mod the shit outta it then anything is cool. Just get an LS1, not an LT1 imo.

instead of banning him can we just replace his title where it says "permanently banned" to "permanent tool bag".. thatd be funnier to see in the forums

As for the best year theres no question .. they saved the best for last... Itll be the most desired later on in years as well because of it being the last of the SS and Camaro as well.... so Im sure yes they might go down in value now but 20 years from now people will be looking all over for one.

I mean what more can you say .. the front of this car "the SS" is fucking mean looking .. agressive stance.. you see it and the tear drop functional ram air .. unlike mustangs which have it for appearance.. flying up in your rearview .. basically saying "move bitch get out the way get out the way bitch get out the way" famous words by Luda...

I wanted one ever since they brought it back out in 96. My first car was an 86 Iroc-Z back in 1992. Ive been hooked on them ever since .. In 2001 I ordered mine in July .. I'll never forget the day I picked mine up. It was one day after the world trade center tragedy with the planes. Alot of people drive imports but I have a piece of american heritage. Pure muscle and everytime I get in it its like seeing you're one true love after being apart for a while. It embraces you .. Its an extension of me and who I am. When I see another one on the road even if its not loaded I still admire it.

As for the piston slap .. yes it sucks .. but it doesnt effect the power or performance and like someone else said .. it only does it on mine until it warms up.. The engine is famouse for it though. Alot of guys I know at the dealership said others have the same issue.

Best of luck if you get one

I like my 98. I took it to the track and ran 13.98 with it on a 2.4 60ft granny shifting 3rd lol. So I know there are low 13's in it. You figure on a 1.8 60ft your cuting off .6 tenths right there. do the math on that .6 x .15 = .9 tenths at the end of the track.. Thats a 13.08 and then figure that I granny shifted 3rd.. hell, could be a high 12 sec car. Id suggest just waiting for a good deal. You will be happy with any ls1 you get. I waited a year to buy mine. I found this one for $12,500 with less than 50k miles on her. I wanted an automatic but could not pass this deal up!

so what is the differance in horsepower from the 00' to 01' with the ls6 intake? and is it true that the ls1 camaro's and trans ams are actually putting down 305 to the wheeles not the crank they just didnt want to take "fury" away from the corvette and not sell it ?

01SCSS

I've seen stock camaros and ta's dyno 300 at the wheels, some even more. Yes they didn't wanna get vettes owners pantys in a bunch. C5's and Camaros had the same motor.

I think 01's and 02's had a different cam, and exhaust manifolds too. HP's are still pretty much the same tho. The ls6 intake can flow more than the ls1 too.

John02Hawk

Go 01 or 02 because of the ls6 intake.
I would agree.. however, but the 1996/1997 Camaro is still my favorite..

Driver's door will have the code along with the many other gm codes. No WU8 = no 'SS. The passenger door will have the extra slp content if it was ordered.

You won't be able to tell from the interior as all camaros shared the same interior (crappy) materials.

The dash plaque was one of the extra slp content that could've been ordered with the car. It could also be easily bought separate thru ebay or even thru slp.

pass side door sticker was only put on if there was SLP options oredered if its a plain SS then no pass door sticker

haha .. key fob is the key chain you can only get from SLP its basically a matching key chain that looks identical to the dash plaque they give you to change when you get it from SLP... Really nice and they rarely wear out or fade or rub .. Ive had one that I use for hmm 4 years now and you cant see any wear

never heard of that, the 98's had a bigger cam but smaller exhaust manifolds, the z28 is the same car as the SS without the hood and smaller rims, unless it comes from SLP. if your getting a WS6 i would get an 01 cause of the rims. but if your going to get an SS or Z get an 02

The 98's also had larger injectors, and individual coil packs. It's really debatable if they had more incidents of "piston slap". I'm not sure on when they moved the egr valve though.

Author it all depends on your preference. The 01/02's have slightly more power then the 98-00, due in large part to the LS6 (Z06) intake manifold. I've also heard that they have a slightly larger cam then the 99/00, but I dunno for sure.

Most people purchase the 99 models, cause they are relatively affordable and had some of the glithces taken out of them.

I vote 01-02, I run an 01 SS a4, with just a lid and catback I pulled 319.5 rwhp ( non SAE corrected) my bud's 99 a4 WS6 pulled 307.3 with similar mods. I hear 98's had oiling issue's, but as of yet haven't seen any documented proof, I had piston slap when I got it at 38k miles, opened the block up at 64k and went through it stem to stern and had NO discernible cylinder damage :yup: ( stretched a rod :( ) Now that it's all back together no piston slap at all, noisy, but that's due to the stuff I had installed, not the LS1.
