Shifter knob

I'd like a shifter knob. Preferably the MBA one with the Firebird logo. My question is what's up with the tail/no tail thing and is the diameter based on the based on the type of stick I have? I have a hurst and I believe I can just put on the 2' ball..right? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but just want to make sure I order the right one.
