On my car (the IROC with stock open diff.) I broke the small bolt that secures the Large Centering Pin that keeps the axles from walking. The bolt sheared and the pin tried to walk out until it smacked the Pinion Gear. The Carrier cracked from the pin hole to the open window. Upgraded to an Auburn Carrier, 3.73:1 ratio & a TA Cover.

A co-worker of mine blew his 10" up. (S-10 Pickup with a 383) During a hard launch at a Texas street race, he busted the carrier bearing cap and the axle. What happened as that much torque is applied to the Pinion, it tries to push the Ring Gear and Carrier away from it. The stress broke the Drivers side bearing cap and snapped the axle like a broom stick. It also sheared all the teeth off of the Pinion as it chewed on the ring gear. What a mess. Tore up the inside of the housing as well.

Preventing this type of failure that a TA cover is good for. See Link:

I assume you are referring to the TA Cover?

Here is mine, in the '02 WS6;

Yea, I know, eeeuuuwwww! Stock Exhaust! Gonna finish my suspension mods first, then go for power adders.

Under extreme load, the bearing cap bolts will stretch. That along with deformation of the caps and housing make the contact pattern between the pinion and ring gear distort. Then.... POP! Goes the ring gear. This deflection is what the TA cover helps to reduce.
