View Full Version : Grrrrr!!!!!!!

This weekend I installed pacesetter coated headers & their matching off road y pipe...the install went without a hitch but I HATE the way it sounds with the slp loudmouth. It is really really loud...if I lived in the country or used this car only for the track I might not care, but it's just too loud for daily driving. I think I'm gonna have to pick up a magnaflow or something quieter (don't want to add cats).. GRRR just sucks to work on something for a while and then have to spend another $300 to get it sounding the way you like.
On a side note, the install was insanely easy, I don't know why people piss and moan about it so much. You don't have to take the steering shaft out, nor shave off part of the block like one how-to said...both headers slid right up into place. They look great and the fit is superb for a 'cheap' header. All in all it took around 6-7 hours.

its still gonna be loud with the magnaflow.
hooker is gonna be youre best bet.
i thought the magnaflow, long tubes and orp were way too loud.
i ditched the muffler and got a hooker muffler.
now all better.

long tubes with a loudmouth are gonna be very loud, specially no cats. my opinion is that the sound isnt very good either. kinda raspy. put a hooker or magnaflow system on and it will sound great.

loudmouth with LT's and no cats has always sounds like shit. No surprise there.
pickup the magnaflow you won't be disapointed.

08-28-2005, 08:13 PM
Yeah I fully expected it to sound like ass. When I first got my car it had a loudmouth already on it (and an air lid). I wasn't really crazy about the sound, but it didn't bother me enough to change it...I knew it would sound bad with headers, just not THIS bad. If I knew then what I knew now, I would have ordered a magnaflow as soon as I ordered the headers.
Magnaflow > hooker...may be a tad louder but its pretty stainless, GREAT fit, and looks nice. I hate hooker tips.

do you have a cut-out on your car?
keliente
08-28-2005, 08:36 PM
I have a QTP cutout. But it is sitting in my dresser drawer because the ass that sold it to me hasn't given me all of the parts I need for it...I'm missing some kind of wire. Going to consult QTP soon and see exactly what I'm missing so I can fab it up.
I haven't got it on yet because I don't have the actual cutout part, just the electric plate that opens and closes. Probably a good thing I didn't mess around with it yet seeing as I'm changing the exhaust soon and will be back under there moving shit around.

Shell out he dough for the BORLA!! Too loud? Swap a plate, tone it down. Wide open its just as loud as a loudmouth, and sounds far better do some resonance in the offset muffler... the more you put through it, the quieter it gets, but the better it souinds! its probably perfect for you!

Negative. The ground/power wires are there, and then there is another one with a funky connector...missing the other half. It's not a problem for me to whip up something new, just need to know what does what.

Yeah Pace Setter includes some cheap, half assed paper gaskets. I reused my stock GM's. The GM ones are steel. FWIW Even after reusing my OE gaskets I have no leaks. I did the same thing when I got the headers for my Impala.

I actually just looked it up...420 for the true dual system....and 400 for headers....that 820 for true duals..and its bolts right up.
Kelly, did you have to lift the motor off the mounts ? hows ground clearance ? Have you seen the new SLP mufflers for the loudmouth, there's like 3 differant levels. You replace the 4" chamber section with one of their new mufflers.

those dump before the axel, these go all the way outback, and you have to include labor when you pay a shop to install an exhaust system, that is unless you have a lift and can weld?

dont go with the borla it sounds like raspy shit with any of the plates ive tried, and if you use the block off plate it rattles. a friend of mine has hooker lts and a LM and he loves that kinda shit but I think it sounds like hell. oh by the way the borla was there when I bought the car. and I installed my Jet Hots myself and made the OR Y-pipe it only took about 3.5 hours with a lift.

I'm with "FSane" Borlamouth it! Get an XR-1 muffler welded in place of the resonator and it will be much better.
But then again I'm partial. ;)
I was behind a blue vert Camaro last night in Boulder, that I've seen at the track (nice and fast) and he has LT's/Borla and it's the raspiest exhaust I've heard yet.

I would sell the ORY and get a catted one... it's legal, and it will take the edge off of the rasp.

Ive got hooker LTs and ORY and borla cat back and i like the sound but if youve ever seen the design of the cat back the passenger side is louder if you stand out back and listen closely but in the cabin you cant tell and a friend has LTs and ORY and the hooker cat back and it sounds great too

you could also go with a set of Bassani true duals if you dont mind spending the $$..... I would rather do that than trust it with a local shop unless you know what kind of work they do for sure.

Hell no, those headers were so easy to install. The only thing I removed from the car besides the obvious (manifolds + y pipe etc) was the passenger side coil pack - just so I could get more room to get to those bolts. Obviously the spark plug wires need to come out too but all the plugs can stay in. Both headers slid right into place with very little problems. Ground clearance is fine, my car is pretty low anyway so it's not much of a difference. I just can't get over people paying $900 for headers when you can get these pacesetters so cheap and the fit is just unreal.
I bought them used so I had to get new gaskets - the GM ones work fine and are affordable. Also got new header bolts too for some extra insurance, since my car is high mileage (80k) didn't want to risk breaking a bolt off into the block.

I do mind spending $$ and exhaust is not something I'm willing to spend a lot of money on because I know it only takes a few bucks to fabricate - companies make a killing off of it. I do my own installs and my car will never see a shop. I'm ordering a magnaflow as soon as I can decide who's got the best price on them...I love the stainless, the tips, and the fit is incredible (had one on the white car).

Thanks for the good info Kelly, I've heard horror stories with other brands. I don't know what they cost new, but I'll check it out. :yup:

I talked to a guy named Eon that is a mechanic for GM in Irmo, SC. He does third gen motor performance stuff on the side and works with some nascar pit crew. He said the Hooker lt's take him four hours to install, that is with a lift. He said that they are a pain in the ass and you have to drop the engine and transmission out of the bottom of the car as far as the harnesses and hoses will strech to put them in. Idk just a thought.
Off topic, but he also mentioned that on the flow deck, the Patriot Performance Heads flow almost as good as AFR's. Just another thought.

me and a friend put a set of Jet Hots LT's on in 3.5 hours without removing the motor or tranny or unbolting anything (with a lift). the worst part was getting the stock shit off, it took about 2 hours, by the way the guy at Jet Hot wouldn't say but let on that their headers resemble Hookers alot hint hint. Another friend of mine installed the Pacesetters(on jack stands in his garage, it took the better part of a day), and they had a little better clearance than mine and were a little cheaper, they both looked almost identical. both sound good.
