ok i know i saw it on here before but i can't find it. i just bought an 02 and find it to have more punch than my 00. i heard in the end, gm was running out of ls1's and used ls6's to finish the line. are there any identification numbers to look for to see if this is an ls6. please help me understand this crap.thx

The only difference could be the block, GM built ls1's all the way to 2004. There was never a shortage. They found out one of the plants that made the blocks had better breathing waterjackets and stayed cooler so they had them make the blocks for the LS6 when that came out. Some found their way into some 01 & 02 Cars, The only difference you might be noticing is from the LS6 Manifold that came on the cars starting in 2001 giving it more power under the curve and some more top end.

No f bodies came with LS6 engines. Some have LS1 engines with an LS6 block which means nothing.

it was the opposite..they had to many ls6 blocks, but having a ls6 block doesn't really mean anything.

They also changed the exhaust manifolds in 01' so thats why the rating went up for the last two years of the f-body.

While everyone else is trying to have a war over when and what was used I will try to answer a question or two for you.
Yes in 01' and 02' Some F-Bodies did recieve the LS6 BLOCK, (not engine) all did have a revised LS6 intake installed though with better exaust manifolds. The difference you may be feeling could be it may have a Vette Cam. The last few thousand to leave the production line in 02' left with a Vette Cam because they actually ran out of cams for the LS1's. So they borrowed from the Vette. The only way to tell this is to pull a valve cover and check the lobe lift on the cam at the pushrod, (not worth it) Sorry but thats the only way to tell. As far as the block goes though.... There will be an identification stamping in the back on the driverside on top of the casting. You can then look this up and find out if you have one of the LS6 blocks. I was fortunate enough to get my 02' with both the LS6 block and the Vette Cam.
Hope this helps you out a bit

I've never heard that.

I think that in 01' they changed the cam profile to specs similar to the 5.3 truck engine, which gave it a broader powerband, but took a little off of the high end.

In order to compensate for the loss, they added the LS6 intake and better manifolds.

I'm pretty sure that the Fbodies and C5's had the exact same cam specs.

you may or may not have a LS6 block, but what you do have is an LS6 intake and 28lb injectors (vs 26lb) and thats why the power diff

[QUOTE= The difference you may be feeling could be it may have a Vette Cam.[/QUOTE]

I thought i read on here that the vette cam was a milder cam then the camaro.
