Have trouble seeing at night night. The other night a friend drove us home in my car. After about 45 miles, I noticed that she had the car in third, unstead of drive. Could this have damaged the trans. I have a 2000 T/A.:drivin:

I always drive around town in 3. Wont hurt anything but the gas mileage.

So then when you are in drive, it is actually overdrive?:)

That's correct, "3rd gear" is Drive, and 4th is the "D" with the box around it, it will not hurt anything.

There is no problem at all to use 3,especially around town or when driving in hilly terrain. It's actually easier on the transmission, it eliminates the 3 to 4 upshift in that position. The 3-4 clutch is a known weak link in the 4L60E transmission.

Not a problem, don't worry about it man :)

Its the equivelent of leaving a 6 speed manual in 5th instead of 6th on the highway, no harm done, just uses more fuel.

actually there is 1, 2, 3, D so 3=3rd and D=4th, on the A4 1999 TA that I have.
What I like about driving at 3 around city is that between 50-90 miles I can punch it and it revs up much quicker.. if I was on D, at 60mi/hr it would down shift take half a sec to stall, and then it's good. so bottom line if you have A4 just keep it in 3 on the
tranny when you see a good candidate that wants to race. you'll take off at least .5 sec faster that having it in D.

also check your drivers manual, it will say more gas usage per mile if in 3 but, ohh well.. When I race on highways I want to have the best chance to win
I'll throw in the extra few cents for that :)
