Why does a corvette have a different, distinct exhaust sound? It's got that higher, smoother pitch than a camaro/firebird even when cammed. If the motors are the same, why such a unique sound? Is it the size of the exhaust piping?

True duals-two mufflers-crossover pipe. It's possible to tune an exhaust system to get the sound you want,just takes the right muffler or resonator.

I know they've got true duals, but it seems like for the most part the corvettes have a higher pitch to them even compared to camaros with duals. Maybe it is all in the types of mufflers available for both cars

Had a little 4 cylinder car in the shop the other day-it needed a cat back exhaust system.The pipe was broke behind the converter -and it was loud as heck inside and outside the car. A ricer guy would been happy with the sound out of this Quad 4. After replacing with a stock type resonator and muffler-you couldn't hardly hear it run anymore. My point is-you can tune the noise level and tone on any car to sound as loud and deep or as quiet as you like. You could make a Camaro sound like the Corvette if you wanted to-it would take a sound engineer and a sound lab -or a lot of experimentation. You could also quiet that Corvette down to luxury car standards if you'd like-it's all in how you tune the system to sound like.

There's a ton of difference in exhaust sounds even between f-bodies. My buddies 98 vette has a corsa touring exhaust and I'm wondering if that's what you heard. It's considerably different from most exhaust sounds I've heard. Way higher pitch and just a completely different resonance. I didn't like it at first because it almost took the v-8 sound out of it but it grew on me and the uniqueness of the sound is what's cool.
