Hi. I im in the process of buying an intake/exhaust for my LS1. I was thinking of going with SLP Intake or K&N Intake and SLP or Bolra for exhaust. What are the best in each category? I live in California, so Catback is a must.

Depends on what you want...any intake lid will do, they're all pretty much the same. Here's a link to check out the diff sounds of the catbacks...with and w/o mods. http://ls1sounds.com/

I personally recommend the Magnaflow catback.
Not too expensive, flows well, and sounds great IMO.

I had the same problem here in Colorado, I asked the emissons guy, he said all he cares about is that I have all the emissions fittings and cats, ask the emissons people there, the only thing that matters is if the exhaust is clean enough

the bassani tru-duals will make more power than the borla. the bassani hooks to the factory 00-02 cats and goes over the axle to exit out the rear. so, that shuld meet all california requirements. here's the dyno i did comparing the borla and the bassani. pics of the system can be seen on my websites. just click the links in my sig.

I enjoy the Corsa exhaust, its well made and has a raw exhaust tone.

but is the corsa as quiet as they claim it to be while cruising at 75-80 on the interstate doing anywhere from 2500-3000 rpms???

honestly, ive only had the car a few weeks, but it is fairly quiet on the Highway. but sounds great at WOT and in btw shifts.

you shouldn't be doing 3k RPM on the freeway unless you are hauling
Kooks headers on with off road pipe. My SLP loudmouth was to loud and the sound was BAD real BAD. Had a Magnaflow installed sounds a hole lot better but which it was a tad louder at idle.

Tell me if I am right A4 with 3.42 gearing runs:
75 mph = ~2500 rpms
90 mph = ~3000 rpms
When the speed limit is 75 I will be doing somewhere between these two. Generally closer to 75.

Wow I have no clue you would need to find someone who is much better at math than I am. I missed the part about the A4 I have a M6 and my cusing rpm on the freeway is quite low I think at 80 I am about 1700rpm. Sorry, you may be 100% right but I realy have no clue where you sould be with a 4 speed auto.

slp loudmouth or borla both sound great and give very good power gains. loudmouth is a little cheaper so its up to you.

I was really asking someone to back me up on that because that is what I run with my car in overdrive and I am not 100% certain I have 3.42's. By the rpm's that is what the car has but it doesn't match the rpo codes. I am jealous, with my new converter (3000 Vilgiante) my engine never see anything below 2500 rpm unless I am stopped at a red light.

I have the Magnaflow on a stock motor.... Is a nice sounding exhaust.especially at WOT.... Problem is I don't want to have to go WOT to hear my exhaust. My new loudmouth will be delivered Wed. and the Magnaflow is already sold.... Life is good!!!!!! Have never heard it.... But think the Magnaflow would be a wonderful sounding exhaust with headers!!!!:slash:

I had the SAME issue, Magnaflow sounds GREAT, but I wanted a little bit louder, I'm selling my Magnaflow btw,...it has only 1200 miles on it...New it cost 450 so with close to 1000 miles i dunno, i'll take a reasonable offer...

I'd recommend a magnaflow, cheap and affordable, and flows great. Like most said it's quiet, but has a nice WOT tone. Once you get headers though, the cb will really wake up--sound wise.

I live in ca. I had the slp w/the dual dual w/cme sounded pretty good also running w/edelbrock shortie headers. I just installed the GMMG w/the cme it sounds bad ass. luv that muscle car sound.

i'd also recommend corsa if you've got the money. nothing crazy loud, but a great refined tone.

I got my Corsa for $619, a lot cheaper than other brands and a whole lot cheaper that other sources. I don't know the forum rules about going against sponserships but if you want to know where to find it that cheap pm me. I do have to disagree with snake eater, the Corsa sound is very near an open cutout sound which is the opposite of refined. On the plus side, it really has no drone or interior resonance while criusing between 1500-2000 rpms. Depending on whether you have an A4 or M6, that is anywhere between 50 and 75 mphs.

Mine sounds nothing like an open cutout. Maybe it's because I've got forced induction too. who knows..

It may have something to do with cats if you have them. I don't! I could see how cats would cut down on the "popping" that happens at ~3000 rpms at half throttle.

What do you mean by capping it off? I'm looking for a cat back for my t/a, but still can't decide between Borla, Corsa, or Magnaflows.
The Scientist

Borla makes an adjustable system the has a interchangable plate with different size holes in it. Exhaust bypasses the muffler through this hole. Thus, the larger the hole the more bypass the louder the exhuast. Block it off completely (capping it off) with a plate with no hole forces all of the exhaust through the muffler making it relatively quiet in comparison.
If you have an M6 I would deffinately recommend Corsa because there will be no resonance/drone while cruising on the interstate/highway but loud as hell when you open it up.

I just had LT headers put on and OFY. Before the headers were put on I had a custom exhaust system put on. I have no cats with a flow-master muffler sounds like ass since I put the headers and OFY on. I am looking for just a muffler to replace the flowmaster. What do you guys think. Price really isn't that big of an issue. Magnaflow or what???? give me some ideas thanks guys!!!!

I just ordered the Magnaflow cat back today. $440 including shipping. I really wanted Borla's (my dad has them on his 2004 Vette vert), but the price dif was almost double. Decent price? I hope I'm satisfied with it.:dunno:

That's for the info The Scientist. I'm not sure my dad's Borla's have the cap? I have an A4. Price was nice on Magnaflows so I'm going to try them for now..

Hey Scientist, I have a corsa too and love it by the way (except for the over axel rattle). Are you running stock manifolds with no cats. My Cats died and I want to get rid of them but I have heard people say the corsa doesn't sound good without cats. Curious about your setup and if you have any sound clips. Any info would be appreciated!

z28rktec, I have kooks 1 7/8" "race" long tubes with kooks ory. It sounds great but as I stated before in this tread or another, it pops in the middle of the rpm range when at mid-throttle. In this respect, the corsa has one of the negative aspects of open exhuast because in essence it is nothing but a straight pipe. I am pretty sure adding high flow cats would cure that problem. I do not have any sound clips and even if I did it would not do it justice. If you have a 2000 or newer then I have the thing for you. I have (willing to sale) a Bassani stainless steel ory pipe that bolts to the 2000-up exhaust manifold. I had it on with a flowmaster and it made quite a difference in sound and modest in hp. Let me know if you are interested or anyone else for that matter..

I have the SLP 2OTL (the LT1 SS upgrade pre-98) that had been retrofitted by SLP to fit 98's and up. I also have an electric cutout with LT's and a medium cam. When the cutout is closed, it is nice and mellow unless you WOT it. WIth it open, the car is obnoxiously loud and gurgly- which is the way I have it most of the time. My advice is to use the LS1 sounds page. It helped me a great deal b4 choosing to go w/ LT's and a cam. P.S. once you hear a LS1 with a cam and LT's thru a cutout, you will want yours that way very bad.

I had it that way for a while.
Hated it. TOO damn loud.
I went with Kooks 1 7/8" headers and true duals with Magnaflow mufflers. Still loud, but has a great sound.
