I hear about a lot of guys not running cats with headers and can't understand it. With the OBDII they use to do the yearly vehicle inspection, don't you guys who don't have the cats fail? Or do you just have to find someone to "pass" your inspection for you? I live in Dallas and can't imagine running without a cat. Am in the market to get heads/cam install on my '98 Z28 which now just has bolt-ons with Borla catback exhaust. Am I missing something?

If they don't look under it you will pass. You have to get O2 sims or get the codes deleted from your computer, you won't pass inspection with your SES light on

By bolt-ons do you mean headers also?

Just Borla, no headers. Thanks for the quick reply. Now I get it. I am wanting to get headers (possibly Hookers) and a catted Y-pipe.

Might as well get an Off-Road Y pipe becuase you are going to pay for for a catted one and u wont pick up quite as much power from a catted Y. its like paying more for less...

Then I am risking getting "caught" without a cat, besides, it would stink, right? Not to mention the environmental factor.

You should get the headers. Catted or not is all up to you, I kinda wish I had cats now that I don't :dunno: I only wanted to scare small children not make them go deaf

I've got mac mids, ORY, loudmouth

Yeah, you get a little stink without cats, but it isn't too bad. I'd like to get rid of it though, I will end up putting cats on it

I thought the stink was caused from BAD cats... not from lack of cats... interesting...

Just depends on if you are willing to risk getting caught. Lots of people run without emission devices hooked up or with them removed all together.

They don't test your pipes on an OBDII car... just if the computer registers any problems...

Exactly. As long as you dont have a Engine light illuminated(o2 sims). You will pass. No one is going to get down on their knees to check. That is why the light exists. Ran no cats for years, not a single problem(Waxahachie, Tx area.).
