Whats up everbody.I was wanting your guys opinions on this. I have 00 ws6 6-speed and wanting to do a gear swap. I dont ever really go to the track just weekend driver and maybe a race on the street. I was wanting to know if i should just put 3:73's in the rear or go with 4:10's.
-thanx-

Go with 4.10's, I have them and love it. My buddy has 3.73's in his m6 and he absolutely hates them.

The 6th gear in our cars is 0.50:1 so your 4.10 still feels like a 2.05 final drive in 6th. Hell 5th gear drops it to 3.07. You won't get hardly anything out of 3.73's, so unless your sold on the 4.10's, save your money.

FYI - 4.10's @ 75mph = 2010 rpm in 6th.

Go with 4.10's. 3.73's are not enough.

I drive my 4.11 geared 9" rear car everywhere...highway, street, etc... Go with 4.10s or higher if you feel froggy. :yup: You won't regret it.

I've had both...I had 3.73's and liked them. Then I damaged them showing off by burning rubber and thowing powershifts. Now I have 4.10's with a T/A girdle and stud kit...I love 'em, 'cept they whine a little between 50-70.

I have had both too. For fun factor 4.10's were great and I had them for over 2 years. But I switched to 3.73's, because after working close to 70 hours per week the extra shifting started to annoy me. The 3.73's are close to the stock 3.42's IMO, but they do provide more fun factor. If my car was not a daily drive, I would have stayed with the 4.10's.

I have 3.73's and I like them. I put them in when my car was a daily driver and I was afraid of going too far with gearing. The 3.73's definitely made a difference and is a perfect all around gear. Now that my car is a weekend toy, I may end up going 4.10's, but I'm not rushing to do it.

Just had this conversation with my mechanic buddy. He said 4.10's will jerk you back and forth too much cuz you can't hold the foot pedal still. Every bump you hit will jerk you. Gas mileage will take a shit and you will shift way to much. I could see his point so I'm going 3.73's very soon.

Well I don't know about that, I certainly don't have that problem, maby 'cause I'm an ex-road race driver from years back, but I don't think so.

As for shifting too much, you may get into 5th around town.

My gas mileage is as bad as it has ever been, but not any worse though. I will say that it won't get any better, for sure.

3:73's will make difference, but not enough.

My car ran smooth with the 4.10's. No jerking back and forth:yup: . Gas mileage was fine too, since I would pop it into 5th gear in town and use 6th gear sooner on the freeways. The car worked great with 4.10's, but the extra shifting got on my nerves after long days work. If this is not your daily drive, 4.10's would be fine IMO for a 6sp. But I am very happy with my 3.73's for a daily driver.

4:10's didn't make much of a difference at all in the gas milage of mine. (less than 1mpg difference) Take it from people who have actually DONE this mod instead of he said she said.

so which is it?

Changing gear ratio's is harder on the transmission or the rearend?

O, and Why????

I was considering this Mod, but backed away for un certain reasons ( probably because I don't want to break my Rearend)

FWIW..I was considering 3.73's

I have had my tranny overhauled, cause I missed a shift and bent the 3-4 shift fork, now I have a Viper cast iron one. I damaged my 3.73's showing off to a guy that works in our shop and owns a STI, after I put my LCA's on. It is said that the lower gear ratios are weaker and that was my reasons for going with 3.73 gears instead of 4.10's in the first place.

But look where I am now...with 4.10's.

Less than 1mph difference? Even if your a granny I couldn't buy that. BTW I was just passing along info on a topic that is on my mind too. Isn't that what this forum is about. Never said it was gospel. As for getting the mod done, my 3.73s will be in soon enough. I've already got a work truck with 4.10s in it. Personally I think it sucks for daily drivability with out a load on it. I can pretty much deduce that 4.10s in my SS is NOT what I want for a daily driver. I don't want to shift into 5th on a 40 mph street that often to save gas.

Ok gents, I think I'm convinced that for M6 LS1's cars, 4.10 gears are highly recomended. However, my question is for the A4 community, currently I have 3.42 gears is my 2001 Z28 and was wondering if 3.73's would make much of a difference. My car is occasionally a commuter car, but that's only to reduce the mileage collection on my Hemi Ram, but normally it's my weekend car. The 3.42's feel great, but I was wondering if 3.73's would be much more fun.

I had supposedly 2.73s in my 98 and I switched them out to 3.73s. My quarter mile time went from 13.99 at 104 (previous owner) to 13.80s with the 3.73s. I know for a fact that I have the 3.73 now. Maybe didn't have the original 2.73s maybe it had 3.23s. Anyways, I didn't notice a huge difference at all except that I don't accelerate as fast above 75. (Obvisiously it did though) On bottle the best I can muster is 12.86 @ 124. But my rearend is also back in the shop for extreme whining. My two cents, 3.73s ain't deep enough for an a4. I would go with 4.10s if you race alot if not 3.73s probably the better choice if you drive alot on the highway and don't race much. at 65 I turn 2450 and at 75 I turn around 2700 with 3.73s. If I have to change the gears I will put 4.10s back in it and have it reprogrammed again.

Street gear... go w/the 3.73. I run a 26" tire at the track and on the street. Moser rear, 3.73 gear and 5700 Rpm going thru the traps. Best MPG so far is 30. Works great. Best of both worlds. Besides, the 1/2 shift comes pretty quick as is. Does a street car really need a bulldog?
