Port questions....

I know that ports are used to tune the subs to a particular frequency. the guidelines on subs that I'm putting in mine say that they need to be 11.75 inches long. but as with all f-bodies space is an issue. a friend told me that I could use two ports of shorter length and get the same results, as long as total length was equal to 11.75 this doesn't sound right to me though. what do you all think? do i need one port 11.75 inches long, or will two ports that are 5 7/8 inches long work?
