Okay, I'm a newbie, and there's probably already a thread I can't find addressing this, but.......
I got to test drive a GTO for the weekend (full tank of gas, 4000 miles on the odometer, 6-spd.....okay, yeah, I had fun :drivin: ) and, well, I like the acceleration, but I hate the cruise rpm. I'm starting to plan some mods to my TA (almost paid off, gonna have some $ avail), and I was wondering:

Can I get the gears in my T56 changed--I want to change 1st through 3rd, but leave 4th through 6th the way they are (A little better acceleration off the line, but keep the fuel economy on the road). Current: 2.66 1st, 1.78 2nd, 1.30 3rd, 1.00 4th, .74 5th, .50 6th; proposed: 2.97 1st, 2.07 2nd, 1.43 3rd, 1.00 4th, .74 5th, .50 6th.

Can anyone tell me more about this change? Is it reasonable? Downsides? Who can do it? Suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

btw, my rear end is 3.42:1.

First, You will not be able to get the 2.97 1st with the .5 6th.If you could, you would be talking mondo $ to buy& install a full gearset. Best you can do it buy a GTO trans and convert it to fit your F car. This will also be the cheapest but you will have the GTO OD ratios.

Nuts. So you're telling me that disassembling the thing and changing a couple of the gears is gonna cost major bucks? :thinkin:

No other options?

Guess I'll have a beer and think more about how to spend my money.
