Replacing monsoon questions

I currently have 98 firebird with the monsoon system. I also have a single Alpine type e 12" sub and amp which i plan to keep.

Im planning on replacing everything else.

What i have descided on so far:
head unit- Alpine CDA-9856
Amp- 4 channel Alpine MRP-F450
Front speakers- Alpine type - r components 17ls

Im not sure about the rear speakers. Would 6.5 alpine type r coaxials in the sail pannels in place of the subs be overkill for passengers in the back? Would it be better to modify the rear hatch speakers to put 5x7s in? Would they be too far back?

Also would this system be alot better than the premium monsoon system?

All you need is the door speakers and a sub or two to have an excellent sound system IMO. Forget about the rear speakers all together is what I always say. Since we have similar cars you might want to check out my setup. Especially the part about using the Type-R's in your doors.

so are you even still running the factory speakers in the rear? Is your system alot better then the monsoon?

I'm not running any speakers at all in back. I never have anyone sitting in back and even if I did I don't consider having a speaker blasting into your shoulder as quality listening. My setup sound WAY better than the POS Monsoon system ever did.

do you think if i modified the back for some type-r 5x7s it would be even better, or would it be too far back?

I don't recommend any speakers in back. The only time I think they are needed is if you have a true surround sound system that can add delay to the rear channels. I doubt that the flimsy panel in back can take anything much bigger than the 4" mid that is already there. There is very little mounting depth to work with for one thing and even if you can fit a larger speaker the panel is so light and flimsy it will probably vibrate something awful and sound even worse.
