I have some "Fun money" and as wondering what would wake my car up more, a shift kit or a higher torque converter?? I would probably go with a 2800-3000 TQ. Any advice??

You should do both. But a TC will do more.

What Ed said, and go no lower than a 3200 stall.

I have seen a lot of people rooting for a 3000 stall converter but the guys at the transmission shop suggested a 2500 or even a 2800 stall, :thinkin: they thought that a 3000 TQ would be too much for a DD...basically I trust both sources and I am still confused :nilly: any advice??

go with the tci 3500 stall anymore and you wont like to drive it around town.it gets you out of the hole quick.(real quick)

:werd: maybe too much tranny fluid?? Thanks, think I'll go with a 3000 stall and a shift kit.

I have a 3000 stall currently coupled to 3.73's in my 01 Z28, and it is VERY streetable, so much so, that if I had to do all over again, I would go to a 3200 stall.
Alot of times transmission shops have avenues into re stalled stock converters that are done locally, that's why they are telling you 2500 to 2800, which is a total waste of time and money to install, IMHO get the 3200 or 3500 and be done with it.

I don’t have an auto, but I was always told if you go with one, you pretty much have to go with the other too and best at the same time….

Whatever TC you chose go one higher. :)
I started with a Vig 2800, now I run a Vig 3200 and I still want more. ;)

with a 3000 TQ at what RPM will my car start to actually move?? Not necessarily for racing but, lets say Im at a stop light in moderate traffic, will my engine raise to 3000 rpm before it moves?

Maybe a few hundred more than now. A few weeks driving it, you won't even know its there. But you will want more. :)

a shift kit wont do shit for lowering e.t
i have a tci3000 converter and it drives damm near like a stock trans does.
anything under 3k is a waste. actually a 3500 t/c is what i should of got.

Can I hijack this thread and ask what a 3500K stall would do to MPG?

I really dont think it would change that much or at all

One thing that was mentioned earlier is to make sure and get a Trans cooler when you do this. As others have also stated, go with like a 3200 but for a DD IMHO would not go past that. You will lose MPG since your motor spins up a little more before your car moves. Nothing horendous but just FYI. If you are also going to have a TC put in you may as well also do the shift kit as combined it will help. You might want to also check which TC manufacturer it would come from. Apparently some manufacturers over state the stall speed and some understate, so you may have one say it is a 3000 and it is really closer to 2800 or vice versa. What is cool about the Vig convertors is they allow you a one time restall to change speed for free but obvisouly you have to take it out and send it back!
Go with a Yank Racing 3200 Stall 10 inch

Yank is what I am using now and it was bought as a 3000 stall but I would say it is closer to a 2800 or lower. TCI or Precision are who I would suggest. As I memtioned Precision also allows you a one time stall change for free. Yank has been good and I stand by them but if you want a 3000 stall you better get a 3200 hundred or higher from them. Again, this is just what I have experienced.

How hard is it to install a torque coverter? Is there a step by step on how to do it?

I have a Yank 3000 and have had good luck with it. I also did a trans cooler which is a must if you want your trans to live a longer life. I didn't do a shift kit because the shifts didn't suffer too much but I am worried the slightly longer shift times may be causing excessive wear on the trans so I think im going to do a shift kit and restore the old shift firmness and if anything make it a little harder than stock.
After using many brands i would say Yank is by far the best i have used, The reason there converters seem to flash 200RPM lower is they are more efficent on the street under moderate throtle aplication, But coupled with the right transmission they will put an F body sideways under full throtle aplication

Good info! I will give Yank this that it has been a great convertor and now that I have the "Street" based 200 lower that makes sense. That also helps with MPG!

You'll find a step-by-step here, both for the convertor and the cooler.
