View Full Version : Is my trans going out??

Finished washing my car up and decided to go for a little drive.. after taking off from a stop sign my car seemed to slip.. after coming up to another stop sign I paid close attention and it did the same thing.. slipped up to about 2500rpm then took off real slow. I decided to go out on the highway to speed up and see what it did. After it shifted and got up to highway speed 55-60 everything seemed fine. So I turned around to go home and once I stopped and got turned around it slipped again at low speeds from a stop. By the time I got home I could hear a whine coming from the transmission. I have a level 2 performabuilt trans with a 3400 stall.. its weird because when my stock transmission went out it was the third n fourth gears. I could still drive in first n second.. Pretty much the opposite now.. When I got home I slowed down a lot to go over the curb in front of my garage.. I always stop and creep over the curb but my car could barely go over it due to all the slipping at low speeds..

Sounds like clutch slipping. It will rev when taking off, once you get going its ok, but leaving.......

PM preformabuilt or call them Monday. Is it still under warrenty?

first things first check the fluid level and condition,if it smells burnt you may have a problem ,iif it does smell bad next you would drop the pan and check to make sure the filter isnt clogged ,if it is clogged change it out and the fluid and you may be able to keep the trans from completely crappin out on you,as long as you dont drive it any more in that condition, its worth checking out the easy stuff before you go pulling the trans out again, let us know what you find

No warranty. fluid is full

I would still call them and see if they can help you figure it out. It maybe something they can walk you through to fix your self. It can be something as simple as a bad solinoid or leaky valve body. It sounds like your not getting enough apply pressure. Most slips are not actual worn parts.

Got it scanned. p0748 pressure solenoid.. hopefully nothing major

Persure control solenoid electrical . Do not drive as your line presure may be low and cause damage. I would replace the solenoid and fliter and see what happens. I would also observe whats in pan when you are in there. Give us a call is you need anything.

Never done this before but im going to attempt to fix this myself. Was wondering what to look out for.. I know i'll need the solenoid, pan gasket, filter, and fluid.. what kind of fluid do you recommend and how much will I need?? also torque specs for the pan gasket.

Finished replacing the solenoid the other day.. didn't help.. still having the same problem. The car is making noise while idling and feels like slipping in low gears.

Well if the fluid is clean I would still think possibly electrical. However if you are out of warranty we do have the restore program $950 which includes shipping both ways all parts and labor with a new warranty, Just something to consider.

I have been thinking about that. But could this be a torque converter issue? Is that included in the restore program??

It's the clutch or pressure plate if auto. Had same thing a million times in varous cars. If sensor would have started at intermitten times. If trans it would act up more once fluid got hot. Slipping from take off is clutch/pressure plate.

Okay.. How do I go about fixing that??

Your asking the wrong person, I would drop it off at my mechanic and tell him I'd be back at 5. I guess you can do it yourself, but usually it cost less money if you let someone experienced do it.

I thought it was clutch with manual and pressure plate with auto. Anyway its one of those is f$cked and needs to be changed. I can lead the horse to water but cant tell him how to drink.LOL

I can lead the horse to water but cant tell him how to drink.LOL on a manual trans car the clutch is sandwiched between the flywheel on the engine and the pressure plate with the pedal out, when you push the pedal in you release the pressure on the clutch allowing the engine to spin free from the drivetrain. the flywheel and pressure plate spin with the engine, the clutch plate is locked to the input shaft of the transmission.

:wtf: There is an internal clutch pack no plate other than a flex plate and I have no clue what the rest is about.

Clear the code and have it scanned again and have someone check the line pressure to see what pressure you've got. If it slips your not getting enough apply pressure. Clutch packs don't wear out that fast and neither do bands. I beat the shit out of a set for 6 months and the guy I had go through mine said they looked good enough to use again.
I had a preformance trans place have me chase electrical crap for 6 months untill I just finally broke the trans and turns out I broke a beast sun shell that had a manufacturing defect in it and cause all these odd problems for 6 months.

I might just send it back to performabuilt..

You were having issues similar to mine?? I don't even drive the car anymore.. there is a noise coming from the transmission no matter what gear I have it in it sounds horrible.. even if its idling in park it sounds like shit. Not sure what exactly is broken but at this point I'm thinking its toast. $950 to have performabuilt rebuilt it and $400 for the shop to take it out and reinstall.. not sure if it's even worth it. I'm looking at about $1500 to get it fixed when I only got 20,000 miles out of it to begin with..

Bossman if your in park and it sounds like shit you have big problems. I have had trans problems before, but never sitting still in park. Good luck.

If you have a garage and some basic tools you can take it out and put it back in. All you need for the bell housing bolts is a couple of long extentions. Sounds like something ended up in the Torque converter.
I have looked and even getting a used trans out of a junk yard is 900 bucks here in FL so take it out and send it back to them and give it another shot. I have had extreamly bad luck with parts breaking that shouldn't break not just on the car but in everything I do and it sucks man, I know how you feel. I didn't get even a week out of the first trans and then they had me running around looking for problems that weren't there. I changed wire harnesses, computers, check PCM programming and all along it was the sun shell. I pulled that trans 3 times and told them to figure it out and the asses never opened it up they just put it in a test car and ran a manual controller on it and everytime it worked fine for them. In total I have spent 1600 on the trans, 300 on fluid and 2 filters, gaskets time, it's just unreal but thats were the quallity is in this country right now. It's probably nothing that preformabuilt did wrong but a bad part that was made in some third world country and this is the result. It sucks and I hate to see it for ya but 900 beter than a whole new 1700. did they say weather they would include a new converter in that price?

Havent found out about the converter yet.. but I hope that's included. I'd imagine it's toast as well.

the converter is the only thing that can really make a noise is park so if i were you ,when you do get it out take and hole it over a bucket and see what falls out im betting little pieces of converter fins. and if thats the case then all that metal is stuck in your clutches ,seals ,and just waiting to grind the hell out of the planetary gears ohhh the destruction it can cause ,i hope your not in that kinda shape good luck

I took it into the shop n they said reverse went out while it was there.. so they went ahead and pulled it.. I'm sending it back to performabuilt.. they told me the converter isnt included in the restore..

performabuilt
07-27-2009, 08:29 AM
The Converter is not included in the 950 however is cheap when done with the trans relativley anyway at 150 . The root of the issue was probably the presure control solenoid which resulted in clutch failure. This can happen really quickly when driving really only a matter of a few miles can do considerable damage.

1986camarojoe
07-27-2009, 08:40 AM
So can I just send the converter with it and have it done also?? sounds better than having everything reinstalled just to find the converter is bad also..

Atleast I had better luck than you, I got about 20,000 miles on mine. haha. Remember when we had to drive your car to your house in reverse when that transmission took a shit with like 50 miles on it?? nice picture btw

Its alright, they replaced it for like half price but still, ive got about $3500 wrapped up in a transmission now. One thats advertised to handle 700+ horsepower and my camaro might have 350..
