Well, I got fed up this past weekend and decided to change my wheel bearings to hopefully rid myself of the infamous wahwahwahwah sound. 6 hours later, I find out thats not the problem. It still makes the sound after new bearings and seals, just not quite as loud. Its never been too overpowering, but you can hear it a lil. Believe I might just bite the bullet and put a new rear in altogether. Or trade the damn thing. lol I think it may be just the ring and pinion. Is it natural to have a lil noise from the differential? Everything looked to be in great shape.

I have the same dam problem on my 99 TA and it's going in Wednesday to get checked out let me know if you find anything and I'll do the same. My rear end was redone by GM 15 000 miles ago and it does the same exact noise I'm being told no additive will do exactly that do you have additive in your fluid?

I added 6 ounces, bought it along with the oil. It may quiet down after I put a few more miles on it. It's a lil more quiet than it was, but I wanted it to be non-existent. I'm wondering if a thicker viscosity oil would silence it. My pinion bearing seems to be intact, so I'm not sure what direction to look in now.

I was told by a mechanic that you need to put at least 100 miles on it and do a lot of turning left and right sharp turn no donnuts that doesn't help I guess but it's fun :-) I'll let you know if I find anything I'm gthe same way I need it to be completely quiet and I get a vibration at 70 mph and up so that needs to be fixed as well

Where is the carrier bearing? Inside the differential?

unless you have a v6 car, you have no carrier bearing. sounds like the outer pinion bearing might be going bad causing the pinion gear to ride on the ring gear out of spec.

When I speak the "wahwahwahwah sound" out loud it reminds me of a tire noise. But I assume you think you're hearing a rear end noise?

Its definitely metal, almost like a warped rotor. The brakes are brand new and the rotors are fine. The wheel bearings are new. It quietens down when I push the clutch in, and as I let it out you can hear the distinctive sound begin again. I thought it may be the gears in the transmission, however, it does it at all speeds and gears, just more noticeable at certain times.

All f-bods have carrier bearings.The differential carrier(posi)has a bearing on each end of it.Open carrier,auburn posi,torsen,eaton all have 2 carrier bearings.When a carrier bearing starts to go,it'll 'growl' and potentially sound like a bad axle bearing.

ah that carrier bearing. i was refering to the driveshaft carrier bearing.
