I recently changed the automatic transmission fluid and filter on my ’99 Camaro Z-28. The Haynes manual says when removing the old filter to “rotate it out of the retaining clip”. I didn’t notice a clip when removing it. When I put the new filter in I really looked for it, but I didn’t see it so I just put the new filter in as far as it would go and bolted the pan back on. Now I’m worried that I did somehow miss the retaining clip and that without it the filter will eventually fall out. I don’t want to pull the pan off again just to find out that there is no retaining clip. Can anyone help?

I think your ok. There is a filter seal like the one on the left in the picture below. That seal acts like a retainer. The filter won't really stay in place without it.It usually stays up in the trans and should be ok to reuse. Check your old filter to see if it came out with the filter.

Thanks, I did replace the seal, although I wished I hadn’t when I was done because that added about a hour to the job.
