when i manually downshift the car into first at lets say 30 mph or so it makes a harsh noise when it shifts down.....kind of a clank/grind.....the previous owner said it has done that since the transmission was rebuilt about 15000 miles ago and that it has done that ever since....he said it was just that the linkage need to be adjusted....what do you guys think

my guess is the rear planetary pinions are wearing and when under stress they are un meshing from the other gears , my car did this not when i was manually down shifting but whn i would punch it in second ,and make it downshift , take it easy on the car and it might last or thrash on it like i did (full warranty ) an get a new one.

umm i dont even wanna start on how bad that is for your trans dude.lol just have to ask why would you do that??!! our cars make enough power to burn the tires, thats the only reason i could think of why you would do that

actually that was a joke, cuz im wondering why you would pull an automatic transmission into 1st gear manually at 30mph or so. sick humor but it worked.

Yea You really shoudn't pull these auto's into first because of the high first gear ratio. It's kinda like tring to do a hard braking down shift into first on a manual, It is never going to sound nice, not to mention the wheel hop you must get. If your talking about a 4l60E, These trans are computer controled so a linkage adjustment wont do anything. The manual valve is in the right spot in the valve body otherwise it wouldn't go into first gear. The only thing that shifter controls is rerought fluid, the computer has to active or deactivate the solinoids. The solinoids change the true flow of the fluid for different gear choices.
