sluggish window motors on 99 trans am

hey i saw the thread about how to install the window motors which is definetly something i bookmarked.

This morning was somewhat cold and when i put my passenger side window down it was extremely sluggish until it eventually stopped half way. I then waited for the heat to warm up the car and put the window up in small steps (as much as the motor would allow each time). My driver side window works much stronger and faster... My question to you is... is there a speed setting on the motor or something allowing one window to be much faster than the other or should the sluggish motor be replaced?

That is the sign that the motor is failing. It will normally do that more when it is cold but if it is starting I would say replace it and you may want to replace the window switch at least on the side you are taking the door panel off while you are in there. Sometimes the switches themselves can start to go bad and cuase voltage irregularities that will also make motors start to fail.

No, there is no speed setting on the window motor. If it's slow, then it's about to go. It's a poor design; much too small motor for such a large window.

hahaha yeah really :-) But yes its definately the motor. Get a new motor off Ebay if you havnt looked, I got one the other day for under 35 bucks shipped! Also, my drivers side motor is dying, it does the same thing yours does, but do this - take your door panel off and make sure there is plenty of grease on your trackways in there, because lack of enough grease will cause pre-mature motor death :-)I had almost no grease in there, so I greased it up real good, and now my window goes all the way up and down without stopping, so you might wanna try that before you spend any money.

Hey guys, While we are on this topic... Anyone know of an aftermarket motor that will last longer and is better than the OEM? I find it hard to tear the doors appart and replace them on my car until I know I'm putting something better in.

I have replaced the motors in both doors of my 99 WS6 3 times and the last time Feb 2005 I complained to GM and they reimbursed me for the cost of both doors.

I had to replace both window motors because I had the same problem. The motors overheat so much they just quit.
