A 99Z with 2.73s' has a 2 series carrier with 28 spline axles.Your problem is common to those with 2.73s'.Changing to 3.23,3.42,3.73,and 4.10 requires a 3 series carrier OR using a 'ring gear spacer',not recommended because it can cause a lot of problems.Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to acquire a complete 'take out' rearend that already has 3.23/3.42.For that situation,3 channel and/or 4 channel compatability has to be taken into account.Hope this helps.
Also it's a 7.625 gear on carriers that also accept 7.5 gears.

All 3 will fit as they're all for a 2 series carrier.
You brought out the other option that I forgot about in my previous post.Buy a set of gears that are made for a series 2 carrier.
Quite often, someone will acquire a 'take out' GM 3.42 gearset and want to use them in their 2.73 car, that's what my original response was to.If you're starting off with nothing and looking to purchase,a set made for a 2 series carrier is the way to go.

my A4 w4.56s' cruise at 3000 at freeway legal speeds.Coming back from Florida to Ohio in Oct.08 from the Daytona Beach Dream Cruise, cruise control to stay with a fast moving group of vehicles in South Carolina put us at 4000 rpm for about an hour.

had me going there also.
mine has 2.73 and at 70 i sit at 2000 rpm.
so with the 3.42 i should be around 2400 just what i want.
its not a drag car,but i do love to play and i drive it 1/3 of the time (have a 1200 bandit and ram 1500)and it does have a 2500 stall in it.
i looked at a 10 bolt with 3.72 on e-bay for $600 (about what i will run me total for the gears, full rebuild kit,ta cover and install)and i will know what i have.
have been hearing kind of a funny ring sound from the rear anyway, with 80,000 miles think its time to fresh it up and bring it to life on the bottom end, without tottaly killing my mpg,i do only run 93 in her.

I find it hard to believe that an A4 w/2:73s runs 2000 rpms at 70mph when an M6 w/4:30s is about 2000 rpms at 75mph. With the stock 3:42s my car (M6) was 1,600 rpms at 70ish.

I believe the sound is the gears. I chewed mine up on a Houston to Dallas ride. the highway onpend up, I put the pedal down, somewhere after 135 i heard a pop and grind and a lond hum and whine all the way home. Drounded the radio out. I have a A4 with 3.23's and replaced them with 3.23 and friday it's getting 3.73's till I get the M6 swapped in around OCT. Then a 9" and some tighter gears but not sure what cam i'm going with so that will decide the gears.
