thanks it actually pulls the left front a good 6 inches and the right front about 1-2 but the picture was a taken just a little late. that was sunday1/11/09 i made 6 passes and pulled the front 4 times friday night i went to an 1/8 mile track to work on my 60' and made 10 passes pulled the front 9 times and note a peep or growl or anything from the stock 85,000 mile 3.42 rear end, i love my car... i'd love it a little more if she'd run 10's lol

General rule I believe is 9" for M6 and 12-bolt for A4. Can't tell you why but thats what Ive heard.
It is because the torque arm mount tends to flex the housing for the 12 bolts which leads to gear noise. Autos tend to be nicer to rears as well. Personally, I went with the 9" and love it. Not to mention I will not be worrying about it breaking anytime soon.

12 bolts have been known to break with modded m6s..more on the heavier side...the reason why 9"s are recommended for m6s are becuase they are built proof ..with their gear size..good contact patch..so you dont get deflection which causes gernading(10,and 12s)..also a4s preload the drivetrain before the launch..so its not such violent shock to the drivetrain(thats why 12s are perfect for a4s..very hard to break one) but for m6s..its no preload so drivetrain shock is exponentially higher then with a4s...so more flex and stress...go 9" even though i am an a4..i will be going midwest chasis fabbed 9" down the road..i like the set up and love the fact that i will probably never break that rear end unless i somehow get 2000hp/tq

For an M6 that will see alot of track time you can go 12 bolt with a spool. Very tuff, the posi is the week link in a 12 bolt. 9 inch with Detroit locker or spool is bullet proof also. Putting a posi in a 9 inch will make a weak link. I've heard mixed things about the True Trac.

9 inch for ANY car planning on launching hard.
Rarely hear of the 9" failing.
Heard of some horror stories about 12 bolt's giving out. Mostly on really high powered M6 cars though.
I prefer the way the torque arm mounts to the 9" as well.

I would recommend a Fab 9'' from Midwest Chassis, they are light and come with a torque arm and LCA relocation brackets. If you plan on keeping the car, racing it some, and adding more power with future mods, you will have peace of mind with the rear.I will see if I can find some pics.

I am biased when it comes to Ford vs. Chevy but that is besides the point! Please no flaming. I know that 9.9 outta 10 will say go 9"
I have a Strange 12 bolt and it is a pretty stout piece. The c-clip eliminators actually make use of Ford set 20 bearings but that is about it. If the car is a street car and see's a fair amount of track time, I would go with the 12 bolt. You will have less drivetrain loss ((Strange even makes 12 bolt center sections for Ford rears for those who want the least DT loss)) and the #1 reason to get one is the fact that you can get them DIRT CHEAP. Repeat, DIRT CHEAP!

i am in total agreeance with brandon, i just finished a 12 bolt install, it literally bolted right in, and cost 2100 brand new with 33 spline axles, c clip eliminators and has 3.73's but will soon be changed to 4.10's. strange is a very good company, i really think mods go thru "phases" like hairstyles for girls, moser imo was one of them, way overpriced and way to much drivetrain loss. get a 12 bolt, and be on your way with some money left for dinner. none of this top ramen shit while all your money goes to your car, im eating steak bitches.

What is wrong with your 12 bolt? I am guessing it's a Moser?
Nothings really wrong with it, It is a DTS housing with moser axles and center section. It does whine slightly at about 55 mph. Im swaping the 3.73's out for 4.11 before summer. I guess my opinion was soley based on,
You have heard of people with M6 breaking 12 bolts. I dont think I have ever heard of a M6 breaking a 9". Im sure it has happened. Thats my only view on it.

One was Fireball and he abused that thing for years and years. Other was a guy on LS1 Tech and the housing broke on a brand new one. Just a freak thing. Usually M6 guys that break 12 bolts it is the Eaton posi that goes. If you don't mind runnin a spool I know several guys runnin spools in em that seriously beat on em at the track all year long.

what are your goals, you listed your mods, you plan on 4 link? big tires? spraying off the line, tons of things to consider, but i really dont think a lot of people with big power that think they need a 9'' can even hook well enough to need that much gear, maybe its just me being pessimistic but i think alot of people over do things.

Anyone have any gripes thus far with the 9" install. I don't fully understand the need for muffler clamps to relocate sway bar... anyone?
Mine was fairly easy to install. The reason for the muffler clamps is that the axle tubes are larger for the 9". You will also have to figure out a way to adapt the stock mounts to work with the new clamps (or get a sway bar kit). The way that I made mine work was to cut open the stocker's hole and than use washers and aluminum shims to fill in the gaps.

Thanks for the feedback... I guess I'll find out when it's on the lift and the new axle is in place. If you dont mind me asking, what torque arm did you go with after the install?

Ok, so I bought a 9" rear 3.70.
I got a new Panhard bar, UMI SFC's, LCA's, Swaybar, and some Qa1 shocks.
Can you guys think of anything I might want to do while I have the rear end out?

I went ahead and changed my fuel pump while I had the rear out. Was very easy to drop the tank since I have dumps and there was no rear end to avoid.

We usually weld up the brackets for the factory type control arms. As most are just stitch welded. It will add some rigidness to have them fully welded after welding in the SFC's.
Also I would add any sleeving for the fuel lines now while the cars up in the air.
